KANSAS CITY - Arizona State Men’s Basketball is set for their second round matchup at the Big 12 Men's Basketball Conference Tournament.

The 12th-seeded Sun Devils (17-15) and the 5th-seeded Iowa State Cyclones (25-5) will meet with a spot in the quarterfinals on the line, with the contest taking place on Wednesday at 9:30 AM MST. The Maroon and Gold are seeking their 7th win in a conference tournament under Head Coach Bobby Hurley. The winner of the Arizona State-Iowa State matchup would take on 4th-seeded Texas Tech in the third round on Thursday at 9:30 AM MST.

The matchup
Arizona State and Iowa State will face off for the second time this season and for the 6th time overall. This will be the first meeting between the two programs at a neutral site. The Sun Devils will look to cut into the Cyclones' 4-1 overall series lead. In the first matchup between the two sides this year, ASU led No. 6 Iowa State 41-37 at halftime on the road before several second-half runs from the Cyclones allowed them to come away with a 86-65 victory. The Sun Devils are looking for their first win over Iowa State since 1977 (0-3).

How to follow
Arizona State will make their 26th appearance on National TV as they are featured on ESPN for the fourth time when they take on No. 5 seed Iowa State on Wednesday at 9:30 AM MST. Dan Schulman (play-by-play), Jay Bilas (analyst), and Kris Budden will be on the call.  Make sure to listen to Tim Healey and Kyle Dodd on ESPN 620 AM (KTAR).The action can also be tracked via live stats.

Neutralizing the opponent
Arizona State continues their tremendous success under Bobby Hurley in games at neutral sites. They are 5-1 during the 2025-26 campaign in a neutral setting and are now 10-3 over the past two seasons in such games after going 5-2 during the 2024-25 season. They have knocked off five potential 2026 postseason teams (Oklahoma, Texas, Washington State, Santa Clara, Baylor) in neutral settings this year. The Sun Devils matched the program record of five neutral site wins in a season, which has been accomplished twice before (2022-23; 2024-25). All three five-win neutral-site seasons have come in the Hurley era.

ASU has won 28 games overall under Hurley (since 2015-16) in neutral site games. That includes past wins over Baylor, NC State, Kansas State, St. John's, Mississippi State, USC, UCLA, Xavier, Michigan, Utah State, New Mexico, Saint Mary's, Creighton, Stanford, Santa Clara (2x), VCU, and UMass.

Ranked wins under Hurley
Sun Devil Men's Basketball has 15 wins over ranked teams in 11 years of the Bobby Hurley era. Three of those have come on the road. Arizona State is seeking the third win over a Top-10 team on the road in the Hurley era. Coincidentally, one of those wins happened in the state of Kansas when ASU knocked off No. 2 Kansas in 2017.

ASU has already defeated No. 13 Texas Tech and No. 14 Kansas in 2025-26. For the first time since the 2018-19 season, the Sun Devils have defeated two Top-15 teams in the same season. Hurley has done it three times during his tenure in Tempe, also accomplishing the feat during the 2017-18 season.

Should Arizona State knock off No. 7 Iowa State, it would be the first time since 2008-09 season (James Harden) that the program has had three wins over Top-15 teams in the same campaign. ASU was ranked in each of those matchups, while this year's team could accomplish the feat while being unranked. The Sun Devils also had three or more Top-15 wins in 1994-95 and 1980-81. This would be just fourth time in program history with three or more Top-15 wins in the same year.

Magic number

The Sun Devils are 9-0 on the season when allowing 70 or less to an opponent. Meanwhile, Arizona State has scored 70 or more points in 28 of 32 games this season (including all 17 wins).

Last time out
Arizona State Men’s Basketball opened the Big 12 Phillips 66 Men's Basketball Touranment with a victory over Baylor. The Sun Devils (17-15) end the Bears (16-16) season thanks to a 83-79 victory on Tuesday morning.

Arizona State came out of the gates strong, overwhelming Baylor early on with their relentless effort. That allowed them to build a 44-35 halftime advantage which they would never relinquish, leading for 37:37 of game action. The Maroon and Gold withstood several second-half runs from the Bears, securing the 6th win at a conference tournament under Hurley in 10 appearances.

It was an all around effort that helped the Sun Devils secure their fifth Quad 1 win of the season and third win in the past four games. Arizona State shot 57.4% from the field, their fourth-highest total away from Tempe in the Hurley era.

Hitting the mark
ASU moves to 54-6 (.900) when it shoots 50 percent from the field under Bobby Hurley. They are 4-0 when it has happened this season, with wins over Washington State, NAU, Santa Clara, and Baylor. Comfortable when it is close
Arizona State has 50 wins in games decided by six points or less since the start of the 2019-20 season, including six wins this season (wins over Texas, Washington State, Santa Clara, Kansas State, Texas Tech, and Baylor). The 50 wins by the Sun Devils in such circumstances are at Top-10 total by a head coach in college basketball during that span. Hurley’s teams are 50-31 (61.7%) overall in games decided by six points or less since 2019-20.

Carr troubles
Baylor forward Cameron Carr is a projected first round pick according to most 2026 NBA mock drafts. He went off in the first half against Arizona State, scoring 15 points on 4-of-8 shooting. Adjustments made by the Sun Devils in the second half paid dividends, as Carr scored 10 points, but shot only 2-of-9 from the field. He came into the game shooting 51.7% from the field. Carr finished 6-of-17 (35.3%) overall from the field, just the fifth time he has been held to 36 FG% or lower this season.

Obi-none
In the first meeting between the two sides, Baylor guard Obi Agbim was a big factor in the Bears victory. He finished with 16 points on 6-of-8 shooting, highlighted by his 4-of-6 performance from three. The Sun Devils completely shut him down in the second meeting, a key reason why ASU secured the win. Agbim could only muster three points on 1-of-9 shooting, including a 1-of-7 effort from deep. It is just the second time all season he has been held to three points or less.

Turning the tables
In the first matchup between Arizona State and Baylor, the Sun Devils had an eight-point halftime lead. Baylor outscored Arizona State by 13 points in the second half, allowing them to pull away for a victory. The Maroon and Gold insured that would not happen again today, preventing a Bears' second-half comeback by answering several potential game-changing runs. The Bears shot 56.9% (29-of-51) from the field in the first meeting. Arizona State held Baylor to just 42.6% (29-of-68) shooting in the rematch.

Conference tournament history
The Pac-10/12 Conference had a tournament every year from 1987-90 and then again from 2002-2024. In 18 appearances in conference tournaments prior to Coach Hurley's arrival, the program won SIX total games (6-17 record; 26.1 winning %). In the ten appearances in conference tournaments since Hurley's first year in 2015-16, the program has matched the total by winning SIX games in a little over half of the appearances (6-8 record; 42.9 winning %). A victory would give Arizona State two wins at a conference tournament for just the fourth time in program history. The Sun Devils have never won three conference tournament games in the same season.

History of Sun Devil Men's Basketball at conference tournaments

Don't count us out
The Sun Devils have come back to win a game when trailing at halftime 52 times during the Bobby Hurley era. It has happened five times this season. In fact, Arizona State has trailed at some point in the second half in seven of its 17 wins this season. 27 of those comeback have come in conference play.

Sun Devil Men's Basketball in Close Games (since 2015-16)

The Moe Show
Sun Devil point guard Moe Odum is one of the elite passers in college basketball. He is currently 25th nationally and third in the Big 12 with 185 assists on the season. His 5.8 assists per game are 31st nationally and tied for fourth in the conference. Odum has 5+ assists in 22 of 32 games this season. By adding two more assists in the win over Baylor, he moved into a tie for fourth-place on the Arizona State single-season assist list. Odum is having the best passing season since Ahlon Lewis set the program record with 294 assists in 1998. He is just one assist shy of moving into sole possesion of fourth-place in single-season program history.

Odum has made 89 three-pointers this season, which is the sixth-most in program history (and 50th nationally). It is the most triples in a season since Shannon Evans III hit 95 during the 2017-18 season. He is five made three-pointers away from cracking the Top-5 in single-season program history. Eight more three-pointers would give him the third-most makes from distance in a single-season at ASU. Three of the top-six three-point shooting seasons by a Sun Devil have come in the Hurley era (since 2015-16). Odum is shooting 38.5% from beyond the arc this year, the 5th-best mark in the Big 12.

Mo(r)e assists, less games
Moe Odum is putting together one of the most productive passing careers in recent memory. Among active NCAA players at the Division I level, Odum's 703 assists are the FOURTH most. He became just the fourth active NCAA Division I player with 700 career assists in the last game. He is the only one to have been credited with 700+ assists and have played in 130 games or less.

Active NCAA Division I players with 500+ career assists
1. Braden Smith, Purdue - 1,029 in 141 games
2. Themus Fulks, UCF - 780 in 141 games
3. Donavan Dent, UCLA - 718 assists in 134 games
4. Moe Odum, Arizona State - 703 assists in 130 games
5. Boopie Miller, SMU - 641 assists in 128 games

Sun Devil fans will be tracking Braden Smith’s total, as he is attempting to catch Arizona State Head Coach Bobby Hurley as the all-time NCAA assists leader. Hurley finished with 1,076 in 140 games. Smith needs 47 assists to pass Hurley. If he were to play the maximum amount of games (40), Smith would need to average around 5.2 assists per game the remainder of the season to pass Hurley. Keep in mind, Smith has already surpassed Hurley in career games played (141 vs 140) and is still 47 assists shy.

Proven passer
Odum ranks near the top nationally in several significant career passing statistics, an indication of the successful career he has had. Here is a closer look at where he stands nationally in several important categories:

  • 703 career assists - 4th
  • 5.41 career assists/game - 11th

In a matchup with Colorado earlier in the year, Odum dished out a season-high 12 assists. It is the most assists by a Sun Devil since Jahii Carson had 12 against Stanford on Feb. 27, 2014. Odum is one of only eight Big 12 players to have 10 or more assists in more than one game this season. He has a pair of 20-point, 10-assist game of the season.

Mo(e)mentum
Known nationally for his passing, Moe Odum is proving he can be one of the best all-around players in the Big 12 as well. Odum is one of only three players in the nation averaging 16.9+ points, 5.8+ assists, 3.1+ rebounds, and 1.4+ steals per game. (Boopie Miller, SMU; Jaylin Henderson, Portland St.). He has at least 10 points in 28 of 32 games this season and a team-best 11 20+-point performances. Odum also has 2+ steals in 12 games this season.

Stop, Diop, and Roll
Freshman center Massamba Diop has established himself as one of the top newcomers in college basketball. He is tied for fifth among freshman nationally, shooting 56.7% from the field (165-of-291). That figure is good for 41st in the country regardless of class and is third in the Big 12.

Diop is second on the team in points (13.8) and rebounds (5.8), producing at that level in only 29.6 minutes per game. He also has a team-high 67 blocks and is fifth on the team with 21 steals, doing all this while committing only 63 personal fouls through 32 games.

He will block you
Massamba Diop is establishing himself as one of the premier defenders in the entire conference. His 48 blocks in Big 12 play were the second-most of any Big 12 player (Flory Bidunga, Kansas). Diop has 20 games with two or more blocks this season, including 12 of his last 14 games. Of his 11 games with 3+ blocks, eight have come in Big 12 play.

Diop has 67 blocks in 32 games on the season. He ranks 18th nationally and 2nd in the Big 12 in the category. He is second among all freshman nationally in blocked shots and is the new program record holder for most blocked shots by a freshman. Diop currently ranks 7th on the program's overall single-season blocks list.

Pushing the pace
A big factor in Arizona State’s success this season is their play in transition. The Sun Devils have finished with 15 or more fast-break points 12 times this season. ASU ranks 71st nationally averaging 12.6 fast break points per game.

Bench boost
A key to Arizona State’s season has been the success of its bench unit. That was no different today, as the three-man unit of guards Bryce Ford and Pig Johnson, along with forward Allen Mukeba, made their presence felt against the Bears' reserves. ASU has now outscored or tied their opponent off the bench in 23 of 32 games (16-7 record). 16 of their 17 wins on the season have come when they outscore the opposing bench. Three of the seven losses when winning the bench battle were to Top-10 teams (No. 1 Arizona and No. 7 Houston). ASU’s bench won the battle over Baylor, 24-10, and now holds a 763-573 (+190) advantage in points this season. There has been only one game in which the Sun Devils did not get more than 10 points from their bench (vs Kansas State).

Telling the Troueth
Redshirt sophomore Sun Devil forward Santiago Trouet has fit in seamlessly since transferring in. He is currently first on the team in rebounds per game (5.9) and has had the most rebounds in a team-best 16 of the 30 games he has appeared in. He is the first Sun Devil with five or more double-doubles since Romello White accomplished the feat in the 2019-20 season. Trouet was one rebound shy of his sixth double-double in ASU's win over Baylor. He has made 23 of his last 27 free throws (85.2%) during a ten-game span.

Trouet had two consecutive double-doubles earlier in the year, becoming the first Sun Devil since Kimani Lawrence in 2021 to accomplish the feat. Two Sun Devils finished tied for the team-lead with two double-doubles last year and Trouet has already more than doubled the feat with five.

Empty the notebook

  • ASU is 7-2 when out-rebounding its opponent this season. They are also 8-1 when dishing out more assists than their opponent.
  • Under the Bobby Hurley era, this is his sixth season in which the Sun Devils have had at least four games with 30 or more free throw attempts. ASU has six games with 30+ FT attempts in 2025-26.
  • Andrija Grbovic came through with one of his best performances of the season. He matched his career-high, scoring 14 points. It is the ninth time this season he has reached double-figures scoring. Grbovic finished 6-of-7 (83%) from the field and 2-of-3 from beyond the arc.
  • Noah Meeusen finished with two steals, the 13th time in 29 games this year he has reached the mark. He also added 12 points, the sixth-time this season he has had 10 or more points. Meeusen was 3-of-5 from deep, the third time he has made 3 or more 3 PT FGs.
  • Arizona State won the game despite leading scorer Moe Odum (17.1 ppg) finishing with just nine points. ASU moves to 3-1 in games in which Odum does not score in double figures.
  • The Sun Devils were extremely efficent on 2 PT FGs in teh win over Baylor. They shot 23-of-32 (71.9%) from inside the arc.
  • For the 8th time this season, Moe Odum had 3 or more steals in a game.
ASU moves to 11-2 when scoring 80 or more points this season. They have scored 70 or more points in 28 of 32 games this season. ASU is 14-6 when allowing 80 points or less this season.
  • Arizona State is averaging 77.4 points per game through 31 games, which would be the 11th-best total in program history. Four of the Top-11 highest-scoring seasons in program history have come in the Hurley era.

About those Sun Devil wins
Coach Hurley has notched 185 wins at Arizona State and has done it while scheduling aggressively and not being afraid to play on the road. He has won 115 games in Arizona, but also has won at least five games in California (16), Nevada (14), Oregon (six), Washington (five), and Utah (five). Three wins have taken place in Colorado, New York, Kansas, and Hawai'i. Two wins have come in Nebraska, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. Single wins have taken place in Florida, Georgia, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Texas, and West Virginia. Thanks to the November Hawai'i trip, Hurley has now won in a total of 19 different states while at ASU. Another win in the state of Kansas means Hurley has now won three or more games in 10 different states.

ASU All Access: Jeff Ayres shares his favorite career memories

Jeff Pendergraph in the Hall of Fame
A cornerstone of the Sun Devil Men’s Basketball program from 2005 to 2009, Ayres left an indelible mark on ASU Basketball. He was part of the 2025 Sun Devil Athletics Hall of Fame class. Over 126 games, he averaged 12.6 points, 7.5 rebounds, and shot an impressive 58 percent from the field. His senior season was his finest, as he led the nation in field goal percentage at 66 percent, averaged 14.5 points and 8.2 rebounds per game, and earned First-Team All-Pac-10 honors. Notably, he delivered a 31-point, 11-rebound performance in a decisive win over Stanford in January 2009.

Ayres ranks sixth all-time in scoring (1,588 points), second in rebounds (942), and his 2008-09 field goal percentage is the school record. He is the only player in program history to lead the team in rebounding four consecutive seasons and helped guide ASU to a 25-win campaign and NCAA Tournament berth in his senior year.

Following his collegiate career, Ayres was selected in the 2009 NBA Draft and went on to play six seasons in the NBA, including a championship run with the San Antonio Spurs in 2014, before continuing his career overseas.

His consistency, leadership, and inside dominance made him a pillar during a pivotal era of transition for ASU basketball.
