TEMPE – The competition heats up on the road this weekend as No. 8 Sun Devil Beach Volleyball will face four top-15 teams at the East Meets West Invitational in Manhattan Beach, Calif. from March 13-14.
The Sand Devils will start the tournament against the new No. 1 team in the country UCLA on Friday at 9 a.m. MST/PDT. The Bruins are the host team for this tournament. The second dual on Friday will be at 1:30 p.m. against No. 10 Cal. On Saturday, Arizona State will play No. 9 Loyola Marymount at 12 p.m. before facing No. 13 Hawai’i at 2:30 p.m. to close out the weekend.

Sun Devil outlook
No. 8 Arizona State (10-0)
- Last weekend, ASU went 4-0 at home during the Sun Devil Classic, including a win over No. 19 Arizona.
- Arizona State is 10-0 to start the year, which is the best start to a season in program history. It also is the longest win streak. There is no other team in the top 20 that is undefeated.
- Three pairs are still undefeated as well. Ava Kirunchyk and Samaya Morin have played at the No. 1 spot all year and are 10-0. At the threes, Arden Besecker and Zoe Taylor are also 10-0. Lastly, McKenna Flaherty and Kristin Gilmour are 9-0 at the fours, having played just one dual apart. Those with 10 wins are tied for the second-longest winning streak by a pair in team history. The longest individual winning streak is 12.
- The Sun Devils are 5-0 against ranked teams this season, with the best win coming against then-No. 5 TCU, the defending national champions. In head coach Kristen Glattfelder three seasons, Arizona State has had 22 ranked wins.
- ASU has eight sweeps this season, which is one away from the team record of nine. The 2025 and 2019 teams both had nine 5-0 sweeps in a season.
- Over the weekend, Glattfelder reached two new win milestones. She surpassed 50 wins while the head coach at ASU and she eclipsed 200 career wins as a head coach.
Opponent outlook
No. 1 UCLA (11-2)
- At the MPSF Rumble last weekend hosted by USC, the Bruins went 4-0 with ranked wins over No. 16 Grand Canyon and No. 1 Stanford.
- Last season was the first time that UCLA did not make it to the championship dual, falling in the national semifinal to LMU.
- UCLA has never lost to ASU, having won all 13 matchups.
No. 10 Cal (8-5)
- The Bears were on the road at the MPSF Rumble in LA. Cal’s lone loss of the weekend came at the hands of No. 3 USC. The team picked up ranked wins against No. 13 LSU and No. 16 Grand Canyon.
- Last year, Cal went 27-10 and made it to the NCAA Championships. Cal lost to Texas in the first round.
- ASU trails 4-12 in the all-time series to Cal. The last time these two met was in the 2024 Pac-12 Championships when the Sun Devils upset the Bears 3-2 to advance to the semifinals.
No. 9 Loyola Marymount (9-4)
- The Lions played in the Long Beach State Invitational last weekend, winning their four duals. LMU picked up ranked victories over No. 14 Stetson and No. 11 Long Beach State.
- In 2025, LMU went to the NCAA National Championship dual for the first time, falling to TCU.
- The Lions lead the Sun Devils in the all-time series 5-1. ASU’s lone win came in 2016.
No. 13 Hawai’i (6-5)
- The Rainbow Warriors played six duals last week, going 5-1 with the one loss coming from Saint Mary’s. Three of the wins were sweeps.
- Last year, Hawai’i went 14-21 and fell in the Big West semifinals.
- ASU is 1-8 against Hawai’i. The first win over the ‘Bows came in 2025’s season opener.
