Men's Basketball opens Big 12 Tournament with 13th-seeded Baylor

How to follow
Arizona State will make their 6th appearance on ESPN+ when they take on No. 13 seed Baylor on Tuesday at 9:30 AM MST. Mike Monaco (play-by-play) and Miles Simon (analyst) will be on the call. Neutralizing the opponent
Arizona State has had tremendous success under Bobby Hurley in games at neutral sites. They are 4-1 during the 2025-26 campaign in a neutral setting and are now 9-3 over the past two seasons in such games after going 5-2 during the 2024-25 season. They have knocked off four potential 2026 postseason teams (Oklahoma, Texas, Washington State, Santa Clara) in neutral settings this year. The Sun Devils are one win away from matching the program record of five neutral site wins in a season, which has been accomplished twice before (2022-23; 2024-25).

ASU has won 27 games overall under Hurley (since 2015-16) in neutral site games. That includes past wins over NC State, Kansas State, St. John's, Mississippi State, USC, UCLA, Xavier, Michigan, Utah State, New Mexico, Saint Mary's, Creighton, Stanford, Santa Clara (2x), VCU, and UMass.

Last time out
Arizona State Men’s Basketball closed their regular season by dropping a road contest to No. 6 Iowa State on Saturday. The Sun Devils found themselves with a 41-37 halftime lead courtesy of a 10-0 run to close the half. However, several second half runs by Iowa State ultimately proved to be the difference. Odum, Diop, and Johnson each scored in double figures. The Maroon and Gold held the Cyclones to 38.2% from the field in the first half despite playing in one of the toughest environments in college basketball.

The Sun Devils are 9-0 on the season when allowing 70 or less to an opponent. Meanwhile, Arizona State has scored 70 or more points in 27 of 31 games this season (including all 16 wins).

Conference tournament history
The Pac-10/12 Conference had a tournament every year from 1987-90 and then again from 2002-2024. In 18 appearances in conference tournaments prior to Coach Hurley's arrival, the program won SIX total games (6-17 record; 26.1 winning %). In the nine appearances in conference tournaments since Hurley's first year in 2015-16, the program has nearly matched the total by winning FIVE games in half the appearances (5-8 record; 38.5 winning %)

Comfortable when it is close
Arizona State has 49 wins in games decided by six points or less since the start of the 2019-20 season, including four wins this season (wins over Texas, Washington State, Santa Clara, and Kansas State). The 49 wins by the Sun Devils in such circumstances are at Top-10 total by a head coach in college basketball during that span. Hurley’s teams are 49-31 (61.3%) overall in games decided by six points or less since 2019-20. Taking it a step further, ASU is 10-4 in one-possession games over the past three seasons.

The Moe Show
Sun Devil point guard Moe Odum is one of the elite passers in college basketball. He is currently 27th nationally and fourth in the Big 12 with 183 assists on the season. His 5.9 assists per game are 28th nationally and tied for third in the Big 12. Odum has 5+ assists in 22 of 31 games this season. With a seven-assist performance against No. 6 Iowa State, he moved into fifth-place on the Arizona State single-season assist list. Odum is having the best passing season since Ahlon Lewis set the program record with 294 assists in 1998. He is just three assists shy of moving into fourth-place in single-season program history.

Odum has now made 89 three-pointers this season, which is the sixth-most in program history (and 49th nationally). It is the most triples in a season since Shannon Evans III hit 95 during the 2017-18 season. He is five made three-pointers away from cracking the Top-5 in single-season program history. Eight more three-pointers would give him the third-most makes from distance in a single-season at ASU. Three of the top-six three-point shooting seasons by a Sun Devil have come in the Hurley era (since 2015-16). Odum is shooting 39.2% from beyond the arc this year, the 6th-best mark in the Big 12.

Mo(r)e assists, less games
Moe Odum is putting together one of the most productive passing careers in recent memory. Among active NCAA players at the Division I level, Odum's 701 assists are the FOURTH most. He became just the fourth active NCAA Division I player with 700 career assists in the last game. He is the only one to have been credited with 700+ assists and have played in 129 games or less.

Sun Devil fans will be tracking Braden Smith’s total, as he is attempting to catch Arizona State Head Coach Bobby Hurley as the all-time NCAA assists leader. Hurley finished with 1,076 in 140 games. Smith needs 47 assists to pass Hurley. If he were to play the maximum amount of games (40), Smith would need to average around 5.2 assists per game the remainder of the season to pass Hurley. Keep in mind, Smith has already surpassed Hurley in career games played (141 vs 140) and is still 47 assists shy.

Odum ranks near the top nationally in several significant career passing statistics, an indication of the successful career he has had. Here is a closer look at where he stands nationally in several important categories:

In a matchup with Colorado earlier in the year, Odum dished out a season-high 12 assists. It is the most assists by a Sun Devil since Jahii Carson had 12 against Stanford on Feb. 27, 2014. Odum is one of only eight Big 12 players to have 10 or more assists in more than one game this season. He has a pair of 20-point, 10-assist game of the season.

Mo(e)mentum
Known nationally for his passing, Moe Odum is proving he can be one of the best all-around players in the Big 12 as well. Odum is one of only three players in the nation averaging 17.1+ points, 5.9+ assists, 3.0+ rebounds, and 1.4+ steals per game. (Boopie Miller, SMU; Jaylin Henderson, Portland St.). He has at least 10 points in 28 of 31 games this season and a team-best 11 20+-point performances. Odum also has 2+ steals in 11 games this season. 

Odum has two career 30-point performances, both of which have come this season (36 vs Texas; 33 vs Cincinnati). Through 31 games, he has already registered 11 of his 15-best career scoring performances.

Getting to the line
As a team, Arizona State ranks 66th nationally and 4th in the Big 12 averaging 23.2 free throw attempts per game. Their 17.5 free throws made per game are 46th nationally and 3rd in the conference. In 33 games last season, ASU had only five instances in which they attempted 27 or more free throws. They have accomplished the feat nine times through 31 games this year. In 2024-25, the Sun Devils had only two games where they attempted 34 or more free throws (in 33 games). They have accomplished this MORE TIMES this season (4) through 31 games. Over the past 20 games, the Sun Devils are 342-of-439 (.779) from the free-throw line. In the prior 11 games, they were just 202-of-281 (.719).

Moe Odum has been the driving force behind the increased free-throw frequency. Odum is shooting 113-of-136 (83.1%) on the year, the eighth-highest mark in the Big 12. 

Earlier in the season, Arizona State enjoyed historic success from the free-throw line against UCLA. The Sun Devils finished 25-of-26 (96.2%) from the stripe, including connecting on their first 25 attempts of the game. It is the second-best free-throw shooting performance in program history and the best in a game in which the Sun Devils attempted 20 or more free throws.

Stop, Diop, and Roll
Freshman center Massamba Diop has established himself as one of the top newcomers in college basketball. He is fifth among freshman nationally, shooting 56.9% from the field (161-of-283). That figure is good for 39th in the country regardless of class and is third in the Big 12.

Diop is second on the team in points (13.9) and first in rebounds (5.9), producing at that level in only 29.5 minutes per game. He also has a team-high 67 blocks and is fifth on the team with 21 steals, doing all this while committing only 63 personal fouls through 31 games.

He will block you
Massamba Diop is establishing himself as one of the premier defenders in the entire conference. His 48 blocks in Big 12 play were the second-most of any Big 12 player (Flory Bidunga, Kansas). Diop has 20 games with two or more blocks this season, including 12 of his last 13 games. Of his 11 games with 3+ blocks, eight have come in Big 12 play. Over the past 13 games, he has been credited with 35 blocks (2.7 blocks per game).

Diop now has 67 blocks in 31 games on the season. He ranks 17th nationally and 2nd in the Big 12 in the category. He is second among all freshman nationally in blocked shots and is the new program record holder for most blocked shots by a freshman. Diop currently ranks 7th on the program's overall single-season blocks list.

Pushing the pace
A big factor in Arizona State’s success this season is their play in transition. The Sun Devils have finished with 15 or more fast-break points 12 times this season. ASU ranks 68th nationally averaging 12.7 fast break points per game.

Bench boost
A key to Arizona State’s season has been the success of its bench unit. ASU has outscored or tied their opponent off the bench in 22 of 31 games (15-7 record). 15 of their 16 wins on the season have come when they outscore the opposing bench. Despite barely losing the bench points battle to Iowa State, 26-25, ASU’s bench still holds a 739-563 (+176) advantage in points this season. There has been only one game in which the Sun Devils did not get more than 10 points from their bench (vs Kansas State).

Telling the Troueth
Redshirt sophomore Sun Devil forward Santiago Trouet has fit in seamlessly since transferring in. He is currently second on the team in rebounds per game (5.8) and has had the most rebounds in a team-best 15 of the 31 games he has appeared in. He is the first Sun Devil with five or more double-doubles since Romello White accomplished the feat in the 2019-20 season. He has made 20 of his last 23 free throws (87.0%) during a nine-game span. 

Trouet had two consecutive double-doubles earlier in the year, becoming the first Sun Devil since Kimani Lawrence in 2021 to accomplish the feat. Two Sun Devils finished tied for the team-lead with two double-doubles last year and Trouet has already more than doubled the feat with five.

Jeff Pendergraph in the Hall of Fame
A cornerstone of the Sun Devil Men’s Basketball program from 2005 to 2009, Ayres left an indelible mark on ASU Basketball. He was part of the 2025 Sun Devil Athletics Hall of Fame class. Over 126 games, he averaged 12.6 points, 7.5 rebounds, and shot an impressive 58 percent from the field. His senior season was his finest, as he led the nation in field goal percentage at 66 percent, averaged 14.5 points and 8.2 rebounds per game, and earned First-Team All-Pac-10 honors. Notably, he delivered a 31-point, 11-rebound performance in a decisive win over Stanford in January 2009.

Ayres ranks sixth all-time in scoring (1,588 points), second in rebounds (942), and his 2008-09 field goal percentage is the school record. He is the only player in program history to lead the team in rebounding four consecutive seasons and helped guide ASU to a 25-win campaign and NCAA Tournament berth in his senior year.

Following his collegiate career, Ayres was selected in the 2009 NBA Draft and went on to play six seasons in the NBA, including a championship run with the San Antonio Spurs in 2014, before continuing his career overseas.

His consistency, leadership, and inside dominance made him a pillar during a pivotal era of transition for ASU basketball.
