TEMPE – Sun Devil Hockey dropped game one of the weekend series against Omaha, 4-2, on Friday night at Mullett Arena.
Arizona State saw both of its goals scored by senior forward Cruz Lucius, with senior forward Bennett Schimek picking up the primary assist on both goals.
Lucius and Schimek have now each reached 40 points respectively this season. Schimek added his 50th career assist as a Sun Devil to pass Josh Doan on ASU’s all-time points list, now coming in at seventh with 76 points in the Maroon and Gold.
The Sun Devils will aim to bounce back in game two on Saturday night with puck drop set for 5:00 p.m. MST. Fans can tune into FOX10 XTRA, NCHC.TV or listen to the radio broadcast on Fox Sports 910 AM.
Period breakdown
First period
- ASU started the scoring five minutes into the game when Lucius found the back of the net. He was assisted by Schimek and freshman defenseman Justin Kipkie.
- Omaha responded quickly with a goal of its own to tie the game.
- The Sun Devils took a penalty that ultimately led to the Mavericks scoring a go-ahead goal with 11:50 left in the period.
Second period
- ASU had a few opportunities to strike back but were unable to light the lamp in the middle frame. Both teams went back into their respective locker rooms with the score remaining 2-1.
Third period
- Omaha scored its third goal of the matchup shortly into the period.
- Another goal would be scored by the Mavericks just under halfway through the final frame.
- Lucius added his second goal late into the contest from Schimek and junior forward Kyle Smolen.
