PHOENIX -- Sun Devil Baseball picked up another series win, taking a 3-1 victory over St. John's in a Saturday pitching duel.

Arizona State (6-0) had a slow day at the plate, but a strong day on the mound, as four pitchers combined to hold St. Johns (1-5) to just one run. Colin Linder got things started, tossing 4.2 innings of one-run ball, surrendering two hits and striking out five.

The trio of relievers that followed held it down, giving up only four baserunners over the final 4.1 innings of the game. Sean Fitzpatrick came in with the bases loaded, and was able to pick up a quick strikeout. Josh Butler followed up with 2.1 scoreless frames to earn the win, and Derek Schaefer closed it out with a five-out save.

On the offensive side, the Sun Devils were able to string together a few hits in three different innings. In the second and third, two-out rallies allowed Arizona State to scratch across a couple of runs, and a sacrifice squeeze bunt in the fifth brought home an insurance run.

"Fitzy (Sean Fitzpatrick), that was huge coming in there with the bases loaded and getting the strikeout passing the torch to JB (Josh Butler). JB was throwing the ball much better today, and then (Derek Schaefer) obviously. What can you say about him? He just continues to do his job," said head coach Willie Bloomquist.

A big performance on the mound. They picked our offense up big time today, because our offense was dismal at best. Pumped for the pitching staff and the way they came in and did it today.”

Turning point
The Sun Devils didn’t get a ton of offense, but they got enough when it mattered. After seeing just 13 pitches through five outs in the game, the Sun Devils did break through on a pair of first-pitch knocks in the first to take an early lead - a single from Dominic Longo followed by an RBI triple from Matt Polk. A solo shot for St. John’s immediately tied it in the top of the third but ASU responded with another two-out rally in the bottom half on a ground rule double from Roellig and a Toigo HBP. Nu’u Contrades laced an RBI single to put the go-ahead run across and the Sun Devils would hold on to that lead for the remainder of the game.

Big moment
A single and two walks would chase starter Colin Linder from the game with two outs in the fifth inning and bring Sean Fitzpatrick into the game with ASU clinging to a 2-1 lead. ASU’s early-season fireman did exactly what he’s done in every outing with a three-pitch strikeout against SJU’s three-hole batter to strand the bases loaded. Fitzpatrick has recorded five outs this season and all five outs have come by way of strikeout. He has stranded all five of his inherited runners on the year.

Final straw
The bullpen continued to hold down the fort with Josh Butler tossing 2.1 innings of scoreless relief before handing off the rock to Derek Schaefer, who picked up a five-out save for his second save of the year. ASU was able to get an insurance run in the fifth on a Roellig squeeze bunt that made it 3-1, the eventual final score of the contest.

Inning by inning
First inning

Colin Linder opened the day on the mound for his second start of the season, issuing a walk to the leadoff batter. A pop out to third, a groundout and another pop out sealed the scoreless inning.

The Arizona State bats were held hitless through the first.

Second inning

Linder returned to the mound for his second inning of work, pitching another clean inning bookended with strikeouts.

After two quick outs, Dominic Longo singled to center, giving the Sun Devils a 2-out baserunner. On the very next pitch, Matt Polk drove in Longo with a triple to right field, giving Arizona State an early 1-0 lead. Polk was then left stranded on third after a strikeout ended the inning.

Third inning

St. Johns tied the game after hitting a home run in the first at-bat of the inning. However, Linder was able to settle in and limit the damage, picking up a groundout and two strikeouts.

Arizona State got another 2-out hit on an Austen Roellig ground-rule double to right, and Dean Toigo reached first on a hit by pitch. Nu’u Contrades drove in a run with an RBI-single to center, giving the Sun Devils a one-run lead once again. Contrades was then picked off at first to end the inning with ASU up 2-1.

Fourth inning

After a hit by pitch opened up the inning, Linder got a quick flyout and groundout. The runner moved over to third, but Linder was able to prevent the Red Storm from scoring, striking out his fifth batter of the day.

Unable to get anything going on the basepaths, the Sun Devils went down in order once again.

Fifth inning

Linder returned to the mound for his fifth inning of work, getting two outs but loading the bases. He was then replaced by Sean Fitzpatrick, who delivered a three-pitch strikeout to leave the bases loaded and keep the Sun Devils in the lead.

Niclai led off with a walk, and Zavorek singled off the pitcher. A fielder’s choice moved Niclai to third, and a squeeze bunt brought him home to extend the lead, 3-1. Toigo got on base with his second hit by pitch of the day, but a strikeout left the two runners stranded.

Sixth inning

Josh Butler was the next arm out of the bullpen for the Sun Devils, getting a quick groundout before surrendering back-to-back singles. Another groundout moved both runners up 90 feet, and a flyout ended the scoreless inning.

Arizona State went down in order, unable to get a ball out of the infield.

Seventh inning

Butler worked a 1-2-3 inning, forcing a flyout and a groundout, and closing out the frame with a strikeout to maintain the 3-1 lead.

After a foul out to start the inning, Zavorek reached on a hit by pitch, then stole second. Hairston took a walk, but a line out from Austen Roellig turned into a double play, preventing the Sun Devils from scratching across any runs.

Eighth inning

Butler came back out, quickly getting a lineout. After issuing a walk, he was relieved in favor of Derek Schaefer, who picked up the second out of the inning by throwing out the runner at second. St. John’s got a runner in scoring position on a double to right, but was able to hold it down with a flyout to left.

Arizona State struggled to get anything going in the eighth, as a strikeout, groundout, and flyout ended the frame.

Ninth inning

Schaefer pitched a clean 1-2-3 inning - including a pair of first pitch outs - finishing off his five-out save and the 3-1 Sun Devil victory.

“Every time I get the ball, I just give the team what I have that day. It's really not up to me to make those decisions. I just want to be able to go up there and take the ball and give these guys as many outs as possible. And if it's long, if it's short, I'll do whatever it takes.”

Notables

  • ASU has outscored its opponents 751-451 over its last 80 regular-season games - going 56-24 in the process.
  • Nu'u Contrades struck out for the first time this season today. Entering the weekend, he was one of just 64 players in D1 baseball with 15+ plate appearances (1,210 total) that had not struck out this season.
  • Contrades did, however, extend his hitting streak to all six games to start the year and brought his total to eight RBIs for this week alone (3 vs. UConn, 4 vs. SJU in game one and one today.
  • Willie Bloomquist moves to 46-14 (.766) in non-conference home games over the past four seasons after going 7-9 (.438) in his first season.
  • The Sun Devils entered the weekend with the 11th-fewest strikeouts offensively in the nation (22) and continued that pace with just two strikeouts last night and only three today.
  • ASU’s team ERA dropped to 3.17 following today's effort. That is ASU’s lowest ERA through six games since a 3.00 mark in the 2021 campaign.
  • St. John’s is 0-for-14 in the series with runners in scoring position after an 0-for-8 outing today.
  • Arizona State has held St. John’s to a low .150 batting average over the first two games of the series. The Red Storm has only managed nine hits in 60 at-bats.
  • St. John’s standout Jon LeGrande - a first-team All-Big East selection last year and Cape Cod League All-Star this past summer - has been held to 0-for-6 batting with two walks through the two games in the series.

Quotables
Head Coach Willie Bloomquist
Opening statement
“Colin (Linder) did a decent job to start it with. Fitzy (Sean Fitzpatrick), that was huge coming in there with the bases loaded and getting the strikeout, passing the torch to JB (Josh Butler). JB was throwing the ball much better today, and then (Derek Schaefer) obviously. What can you say about him? He just continues to do his job. So, a big performance on the mound. They picked our offense up big time today, because our offense was dismal at best. Pumped for the pitching staff and the way they came in and did it today.”

On being able to win games by both small and large margins
“That’s reassuring, because it's been a while since we've been able to win a low-scoring game, or have low-scoring games for the most part. So tribute to the pitching staff, coaching staff, obviously, for bringing in better talent and being able to have the opportunity to do this. We haven't arrived by any stretch of the imagination, but the momentum has been better. Being able to win a game like this and gut it out when our offense just doesn't show up, it’s nice to be able to win that type of game.”

On Derek Schaefer’s five-out save
“It takes a different breed to come out of the pen and close games. It’s the toughest three outs, the ninth inning, and it’s like he's calmer when he comes into the ninth. To have that demeanor and have that late-inning guy that can do that is extremely valuable. Calm as a cucumber. When those things, those situations, get sticky, he just comes in and trusts his stuff, which is what you have to do in those situations. He's done a great job so far.”

On the slow offensive day
“We’re getting situations, we just have to execute better. For me, it's just staying through the baseball right now. We're trying to get too big. Sometimes when you have offspeed pitches that are hanging in the plate or just off the plate, we're trying to do too much with it, and it's how you squiggy it off the end and hit soft contact. We just have to do a better job of getting the ball up in the zone and staying in the middle of the field. Not trying to do too much. Sometimes you do too much on those pitches, it makes soft contact, versus staying through the baseball. One of those things we got to address and get better at. We kind of told the guys in there that we cannot afford to get complacent. We can't feel good about ourselves and pat ourselves on the back right now. It's just not that time that we can afford to do that. We understand there are a lot of areas of our game that we have to get better at, so hopefully we'll have a better offensive performance tomorrow to pull that off a little bit.”

Pitcher Derek Schaefer
On potentially settling into a closing role in the bullpen
“Pitching is pitching. Whenever they have me pitch I'll throw the ball over the plate. Again, if that role ever changes, I’m a Swiss Army Knife. I can do whatever. But yeah, I love the closer role. Again, pitching is pitching, I'm excited to just throw the ball.”

On Colin Linder’s start on the mound
“Huge props to Colin Linder today. I mean just for what he's gone through. He missed the past year and a half with Tommy John surgery and with his first time back in the game last week, he's gone out and given us 8 and 2/3 of 2-run baseball. That's really good. That's really hard to do coming off of an injury like that. So huge props to him.”

On facing some competitive teams in the upcoming schedule
“It's nice to know that we have the advantage as pitchers no matter what. We don't have to be perfect, we just have to go dominate with our stuff. Bloomy (Willie Bloomquist) always says, 'dominate the process.' So that's all we have to do, and we will have the advantage. We just have to do what we do well, and that should beat them.”

Pitcher Josh Butler
On what the conversations were like regarding his replacement
“It’s like these guys have said, every time I get the ball, I just give the team what I have that day. It's really not up to me to make those decisions. I just want to be able to go up there and take the ball and give these guys as many outs as possible. And if it's long, if it's short, I'll do whatever it takes.”

On the mindset he has pitching with runners in scoring position
“You have to have confidence in yourself, and like we talked about, confidence in the guys behind us that they're going to make a play for us too.”

On Cole Carlon’s ability to transition into a starting role
“I think it's cool to see. Props to Ted (Henson) and the whole strength program for being able to develop guys into roles that they might not be used to.Taking him out of the bullpen last year and now giving him Friday night and letting him go do his thing for five innings is huge. It’s really props to the coaching staff as well."

Pitcher Sean Fitzpatrick
On putting the next pitcher in a good position
“That’s our job. We know what our job is. It’s not always going to be perfect to come in with a clean slate. So our jobs pick each other up, and we did a good job of that today.”

On being placed into situational pitching roles
"It's kind of what Schaefer was saying, whenever I get the rock, I'm just going to go throw it and compete. It doesn't matter if it's a hitter like today or if it's an inning like last Sunday, I'm going to compete and try to do everything I can to help us win. I love baseball, and I love pitching. I enjoy when there's runners on, I think that's pretty fun to execute pitches then, but I really don't care. Anytime I get the rock, it's a great day. I'm super blessed to be able to play this sport, and especially here.”

On what they think about former reliever Cole Carlon
“He's a dog. He was a dog last year, so I figured in the starting role he's going to be a dog. Having him go five innings last week and six innings this week is huge because it gets us through the rest of the game. He's doing his job. Obviously we know he's a great pitcher, so it's expected, but props to him. He's doing a heck of a job, and he's also fun to be around all the time, so it’s good vibes."

Infielder Austen Roellig
On the slowing of the offense today, and what they could have improved on
“Laying off the first pitch breaker. I think that's a big thing for us. But, as long as we stick with our approach, gap to gap, up the middle, I think we'll be alright.”

On the offense’s capability to score in multiple ways
“I think it's pretty awesome, honestly, because we have the long ball and we have the small ball. Our coaches preach all the time, like, ‘hey, if we have to do it, we have to do it’ and if the small ball is the way we have to go, then we have to and that's kind of our approach.”

On having a fan base that buys into their program
“It's pretty awesome being able to play in front of fans that really care about ASU baseball. I’m right there at 3rd in front of the ASU student section and they’re chirping. I’m just laughing my butt off. I really enjoy it. So keep going, keep doing you, fans, thank you. We appreciate it.”

Up next
