SALT LAKE CITY – In a tough road environment, Sun Devil Gymnastics came up short at No. 14 Utah on Friday night in the Huntsman Center.
Notable stats
- Arizona State (3-2, 1-1 Big 12) struggled across all four events to fall to Utah (7-3, 2-0 Big 12). The Utes gave the Sun Devils openings to keep it close, but ASU had to count scores of 9.600 or lower on three of the four events.
- Senior Isabella Kowan scored a 9.850 on beam in her season debut, .025 away from her career high. Her score was the highest for any Gym Devil tonight.
- Junior Reese Grolla tied for her season high on bars with a 9.825.
- Senior all-arounder Kimberly Smith scored a 9.800 or better on two of the three events, her best coming on bars with a 9.825.
- Sophomore Halle Braaflat made her season debut on bars and floor tonight.
Final results
- Utah, 196.450
- ASU, 194.925
Rotation one: bars, 48.675
The Sun Devils were slow to start the meet, struggling to find a rhythm on bars. Two 9.825s from Grolla and Kimberly Smith helped regain confidence for ASU.
Rotation two: vault, 48.875
Safia El Mammann scored a 9.825 to start the rotation on a high note, which would end up being the best score of the rotation for ASU. A 9.800 from Smith was the only other score of 9.800 or better in the rotation, but the three other scores to count were 9.750, keeping the event total from dipping too low.
Rotation three: floor, 48.600
It was an uncharacteristic night on the floor for ASU as the team struggled to score above a 9.775 before Smith rounded out the rotation with a 9.800.
Rotation four: beam, 48.775
Kayla Lee struck hot with a 9.825 to lead off on beam. Kowan in her season debut earned the highest team score, 9.850.
