TEMPE – Sun Devil Men's Tennis dominated in the 7-0 victory over Idaho on Sunday behind stellar performances from all six transfer students. ASU earned their third-straight sweep in a season opener after picking up five of six singles wins in straight sets.

Jelani Sarr and Shu Matsuoka opened doubles with a 6-3 win from the third position, while the other two doubles matches went to a tiebreak. Kristof Minarik and Milos Mikovic fell 7-6(3) in the tiebreak on court two, but Niels Villard and Ofek Shimanov pulled through for a 7-6(3) win from the first position to secure the doubles point and a 1-0 ASU lead. 

In singles, all six Sun Devils opened with first-set victories. Mathis Bondaz was the first to finish in his 6-2, 6-2 decision for ASU's second point of the afternoon. Minark's dominant 6-1, 6-1 victory came minutes before Villard clinched the match in his 6-1, 6-1 win to put ASU head 4-0. 

The following three singles matches all were in ASU's favor, as the Maroon and Gold secured the 7-0 win to open the season. Mikovic's third set was first to 10 after the teams decided to play out the matches following Villard's clinch.

  4. Jelani Sarr (ASU) def. Gabriel Moroder (IDA) 6-3, 7-5
  5. Kristof Minarik (ASU) def. Xavier Martin Roca (IDA) 6-1, 6-1
  6. Milos Mikovic (ASU) def. Sander Paradis (IDA) 6-3, 4-6, 10-4

Order of finish: 1, 5, 3, 2, 4, 6

Doubles Competition:

  1. Ofek Shimanov/Niels Villard (ASU) def. Chetanna Amadike/Gabriel Moroder (IDA) 7-6
  2. Mikolaj Lis/Sander Paradis (IDA) def. Kristof Minarik/Milos Mikovic (ASU) 7-6
  3. Jelani Sarr/Shu Matsuoka (ASU) def. Paul Janson/Noe De Col (IDA) 6-4

Order of finish: 3, 2, 1

 

UP NEXT: 

The Sun Devils will continue their six-game homestand with a doubleheader at Whiteman Tennis Center on Wednesday, January 14. ASU is set to face Wichita State at 10 a.m. MST and will follow with New Mexico State at 3 p.m. MST.
