TEMPE – The Sun Devil women's basketball team closed out the regular season portion of its schedule with a 71-59 loss to Arizona at Desert Financial Arena.
Saturday was the program's Senior Day. Prior to the game, Jazion Jackson, Hanna Miller, Adison Novosel, Nevaeh Parkinson and Tyi Skinner were recognized for their contributions to Sun Devil Women's Basketball.
Playing in front of the home fans for the final time, Parkinson had one of the most impressive double-doubles in recent memory, scoring 17 points and pulling down a career-high 19 rebounds. Also coming through with a top-notch performance on her senior day was Skinner who scored a game-high 20 points for the Sun Devils (9-21, 3-15 Big 12).
Jalyn Brown added 12 points and a career high-tying six assists, the third time Brown has had five or more assists in her last nine games. Kennedy Basham, who either led or tied for the team lead in rebounds in ASU's prior six games, had five points, six rebounds and two blocks.
Ultimately, the difference in the game turned out to be 3-point shooting. The Wildcats (19-12, 10-8 Pac-12) made 54 percent (15-28) of their attempts from long range, while ASU connected on only 30 percent (3-10), and had 12 fewer makes.
Parkinson (six points), Skinner (four points) and Brown (four points) combined to score 15 points in the first quarter to help the Sun Devils take a 17-16 lead after 10 minutes.
Due in large part to their efficiency in 3-point shooting, the Wildcats were able to take control of the game during the middle 20 minutes as they went from trailing by a point after one quarter to leading by 15 at the start of the fourth quarter.
In the second and third quarters, 11 of Arizona's 15 field goals were from beyond the arc where it shot 69 percent (11-16). The last of those 3-pointers gave the Wildcats their largest lead of the game, 59-39, with 1:19 remaining.
Parkinson and Skinner (3-pointer) scored the last five points of the third quarter to cut the deficit to 15 at the start of the final quarter.
As they have proven so many times throughout the season, the Sun Devils gave it their all until the game's final horn.
In the opening minutes of the final frame, ASU got within 11 after a 3-point play by Parkinson and a layup by Brown.
It was at that point when the Sun Devils suddenly lost the ability to get the ball in the basket as they missed 11 of their final 13 field goal attempts.
On Sunday, the Big 12 will announce the bracket for the 2025 Big 12 Tournament taking place March 5-11 at the T-Mobile Center in Kansas City.
