CORVALLIS, Ore. – Last-Tear Poa’s 3-pointer with 16 seconds remaining in overtime provided the Sun Devil women’s basketball team with what proved to be the game-winning points in ASU’s 55-53 win at Oregon State (6-5) on Sunday. With the win, the Sun Devils moved to 12-0 and continued to build on the best start in program history.

Sun Devil standouts

  • Heloisa Carrera and McKinna Brackens tied for the team lead in scoring with 12 points each. Carerra led the team with seven rebounds, while Brackens scored nine of her points in the fourth quarter and overtime.
  • Deborah Davenport and Jyah LoVett came off the bench and tied for the team lead in scoring among ASU’s reserves with five points each. LoVett also had three steals.
  • Poa had seven points, including the game-winning 3-pointer and had a team-high four assists.
  • Gabby Elliott scored all seven of her points in the second half. She also had five rebounds and tied for the team lead in steals (four).
  • Marley Washenitz scored five points to go with five rebounds and tied Elliott for the team lead with four steals

How it happened

  • The two teams split the game’s first 12 points over the first eight-plus minutes of the game. A layup by Carrera and 3-pointer by Davenport in the last 1:48 gave ASU an 11-6 lead after the first 10 minutes.
  • Oregon State’s first lead, 16-15, lasted all of 17 seconds as ASU came back with seven straight points to go up 22-16 after LoVett’s two free throws with 1:52 remaining in the second quarter.
  • After Carrera made ASU’s last two baskets of the first half and its first two of the second half, the Sun Devils took their largest lead of the game, 30-21, less than a minute into the third quarter.
  • OSU got as close as a single point in the third quarter but would again trail the Sun Devils by nine points, 46-37, after Elliott connected on a pair of free throws midway through the final period.
  • The Beavers suddenly heated up, knocking down four of their next six shots with three of those field goals coming from long range, the last of which tied the game at 50-50 with 26 seconds let in the game.
  • Oregon State’s Kennedie Shuler hit a 3-pointer 57 seconds into overtime to give OSU a 53-50 lead. The Beavers did not score again, missing their last six field goal attempts.
  • After Brackens’ layup pulled ASU within one, 53-52, with 3:41 remaining, the Sun Devils were not able to score until Poa’s game-winning triple with 16 seconds remaining.

Winning Streaks

On Dec. 6, head coach Molly Miller’s first ASU squad (10-0) surpassed the 1991-92 team (9-0) for the best start in school history. ASU’s current overall winning streak of 12 games is the longest since the 2015-16 team tied the 2008-09 team for the school record for consecutive wins (15). Miller’s Sun Devils are two wins away from tying the second-longest winning streak (14) accomplished by the 2014-15 team. Sunday’s win was significant in that it was Oregon State that ended ASU’s winning streaks in 2014-15 and 2015-16.

Longest winning streaks

  • 15, Dec. 6, 2015 – Jan. 29, 2016
  • 15, Jan. 28 – Mar. 5, 2009

  • Both ASU (55) and OSU (53) scored their fewest points of the season on Sunday.
  • The six points OSU scored in the first quarter represented the 24th time this season ASU allowed 13 or fewer points in a quarter (adds up to 52.0 ppg), the 12th instance the opposition was held to single digits.
  • Oregon State (15 points) became the first ASU opponent in six games to reach a double-digit point total in the second quarter. ASU’s previous five opponents scored a combined 28 points in the second quarter (5.6 ppg).
  • ASU’s 11 turnovers tied its second-lowest total of the season (vs. Eastern Washington on Nov. 8). The Sun Devils had a season-low 10 turnovers vs. SEMO (Nov. 29).
