WBB remains perfect following win at Penn State
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Sun Devil women’s basketball team continued to build on its best start in program history, making it 11 wins in 11 games following its 74-60 win at Penn State (6-3) on Tuesday.
For the second straight game, the Sun Devils (11-0) locked down a team that had the ability score. After holding San Francisco to 44 points on Saturday (more than 30 points below its scoring average of 74.4 point coming into the game), ASU limited Penn State more than 25 points below its scoring average of 85.6 points per game.
Sun Devil standouts
- Gabby Elliott scored a game- and season-season high 27 points (16 in the second half), had three assists and four steals.
- McKinna Brackens had her second double-double in three games and her fifth of the season after dropping 15 points (12 in the second half) and pulling down 11 rebounds to go with five steals.
- Amaya Williams led the bench with 12 points, her fourth double-figure scoring of the season.
How it happened
- Penn State led by five points after one quarter and took its largest lead of the game (20-13) 55 seconds into the second quarter. After scoring the opening basket of the period, Penn State did not score again until nine seconds remained in the half. In between Penn State's two baskets, the Sun Devils scored 20 points to give them a double-digit lead at the half (33-22).
- During the game’s middle 20 minutes, ASU outscored Penn State 46-20 and made 59 percent (16-27 FGs) of its shots while limiting Penn State to 25 percent (6-24 FGs).
- After scoring the first nine points of the second half, ASU outscored Penn State 27-2 going back to the last nine minutes of the second.
- ASU led by as many as 26 after Brackens’ jumper with 2:37 remaining.
Notes
- ASU has now allowed just 28 points in the second quarter of its last five games (5.6 average per second quarter). On Tuesday, Penn Stare scored just four points in the second period, the fewest points allowed by ASU in a quarter this season.
- For the third time this season, ASU forced more than 30 turnovers (36 on Tuesday).
- Gabby Elliott’s 27 points represented the most scored by a Sun Devil this season.
- Penn State became just the second team (Santa Clara/77 points) to score more than 58 points vs. ASU this season
- For the second straight game ASU had 18 steals, one short of the 19 steals they had vs. Coppin State.
- ASU has allowed 13 points or fewer (52.0 ppg average) in a quarter 23 times, including 11 times in single digits.
- The Sun Devils had season highs in free throws attempted (27) and made (20).
Up next
Tuesday’s game was the first of three-straight road games for the Sun Devils to close out non-conference play. ASU will play its final two road games of the stretch next week when it plays at former Pac-12 conference mate Oregon State (Dec. 14) followed by a contest a Gonzaga (Dec. 16).
