TEMPE – Sun Devil Hockey (3-6-1, 1-2-1) fell short to Colorado College (6-3-1, 1-2-1) in a 3-1 (EN) loss Saturday night at Mullett Arena.

Goaltender Samuel Urban stepped up once again, recording his second straight 30-save outing with big time stops throughout the contest against the Tigers.

A late goal with 25 seconds left in the second period from Jack Beck sparked new life for the Sun Devils after trailing 2-0, but wasn’t enough to put them over the top. Beck now has three goals in four appearances this season.

Arizona State came away with one point in its first home conference series of the season. The team will look to get back on track on the road next week as they take on North Dakota. The series is set to begin on Friday, Nov. 14 at 6:07 P.M. MST, with game two slated for Sunday at 5:07 P.M. MST.

GAME NOTABLES

  • Forward Jack Beck scored his third goal of the year in his fourth game as a Sun Devil. It’s his fourth point of the weekend after securing his first career three-point performance on Friday with a goal and a pair of assists.
  • Sophomore Cullen Potter recorded his fifth assist of the season on the first goal for the Sun Devils, his 14th career dish.
  • Between the pipes, Samuel Urban registered 30+ saves for the second consecutive game.
  • Forward Cruz Lucius’ six-game point streak came to an end Saturday, which was tied for the third longest point streak in program history. He’s the 15th different Sun Devil to record a six-game point streak and compiled seven goals, four assists and 11 points in that span.

PERIOD BY PERIOD BREAKDOWN
First Period
Samuel Urban stood tall in net, knocking away all 12 shots faced. The Slovakia native made key saves to keep the Tigers out through the first frame. The Sun Devils created several scoring chances in the offensive zone getting pucks in deep, but were unable to capitalize as the game remained scoreless.

Second Period
After five more minutes without a goal, the Sun Devils went on back-to-back penalty kills hoping to hold off the Tigers. Though ASU showed great team defense blocking four shots to kill the first two-minute minor, Colorado College scored first on its second man advantage. With momentum on their side, the Tigers struck again at even strength just over one minute later. The Sun Devils finally broke through to cut the lead in half with 25 seconds remaining in the period to make it 2-1. A rush down the right side gave Cullen Potter entry before he found Jack Beck in the high slot for the finish. Johnny Waldron was credited with the secondary assist.

Third Period
ASU outshot Colorado College 13-7 in the final 20 minutes of action, but could not break even. A late empty netter capped off the contest for the Tigers with a 3-1 final score.

QUOTABLES
Arizona State Head Coach Greg Powers
Opening Statement:
“I don’t have a problem with how we played. I don’t think we played poorly at all, I thought we played well. They capitalized on a couple of mistakes, and they got a bounce off of Dowder’s (Anthony Dowd) stick for the second goal. Their power play scored one, ours didn't and both goalies were really, really good.”

On Arizona State Goalie's Sam Urban’s performance:
“He was, he was unbelievable, I mean. The two goals he let in, he obviously made a great save on the first one and they got a bounce and the guy buried it— Urban theoretically played well enough to get a shutout too, that’s what’s crazy.”

Forward Cullen Potter
On what they can do to regain momentum during the game:
“I think the biggest thing is just stacking shifts by keeping them hemmed in in the zone. Yesterday in the second period, they only had about two shots and that's because we were consistently in the offensive zone, getting changes and just having them in the zone. That's the biggest thing to gain momentum– just not giving them the opportunity to score or get any chances.”
