GRAND FORKS, N.D. – In the program’s first game at Ralph Engelstad Arena, Sun Devil Hockey (3-7-1, 1-2-1 NCHC) fell to No. 6 North Dakota (8-3-0, 4-1-0 NCHC), 5-2, on Friday night after a three-goal third period for the Fighting Hawks.

Senior forward Bennett Schimek notched his sixth multi-point game of the season to push his career total to 20. Cruz Lucius netted his team-leading ninth goal of the season to make it 2-2 late in the second period. 

North Dakota’s third-period surge that featured two goals in the first 1:40 proved to be the difference in game one of the series.

Arizona State will look to bounce back tomorrow in game two of the series with puck drop slated for 5:00 MST/ 6:00 CST with the broadcast available on FOX 10 Xtra and over the local airwaves on Fox Sports 910 AM. 

Game notables

  • Senior forward Cruz Lucius made his 100th appearance in an NCAA game, his 30th as a Sun Devil. In his career, he has amassed 34 goals and 56 assists, totaling 90 career points.
  • Forward Kyle Smolen scored his first goal since October 10th against Notre Dame, breaking a seven-game scoreless streak. It’s the 21st career goal, all coming in the Maroon and Gold.
  • Bennett Schimek recorded his fourth multi-assist game of the season, bringing his season total to 11. It’s the fourth time in the last eight games this year that he’s recorded 2+ assists in a game. Additionally, in his career, he has eight multi-assist games.
  • For Schimek, it’s his 20th career multi-point game, his sixth this season.
  • Freshman netminder Samuel Urban recorded his third-straight game with 30+ saves, tallying 38 on the night, which is also a career-high.

    Period-by-period breakdown
    First Period 
    North Dakota was in control for the opening ten minutes of the game, managing to fire 11 shots compared to Arizona State’s three shots on net. The Fighting Hawks scored the first goal of the game with 8:03 remaining in the period and tried to double their lead on the power play in the final moments of the period, but a Sun Devil penalty kill kept the game at a one-goal deficit.

    Freshman Sam Urban recorded 17 saves in the period, including three in the final 30 seconds to send the Sun Devils down one after the first 20 minutes.

Second period
The Fighting Hawks found a way past the Sun Devils halfway through the second frame, making it 2-0. Then, a North Dakota penalty put ASU on the power-play, where Cullen Potter found Kyle Smolen in the offensive zone, and gave the Sun Devils their first goal of the night, cutting the deficit in half, 2-1.

With less than two minutes left in the period, Cruz Lucius lit the lamp with a sharp wrist shot after receiving the puck from a Bennett Schimek pass, tying the game at two apiece after two frames. Going into the game, Lucius was tied for third in the NCHC with eight goals.

Third period 
North Dakota scored two goals in the first two minutes of the final frame to extend their lead, 4-2, with 18 minutes remaining in regulation. The Fighting Hawks tallied another goal on the power play to extend their lead to 5-2 and sealed the win.
