SAN DIEGO – The Sun Devil women’s basketball team (3-0) tied a single-game school record with 14 makes from downtown, giving Molly Miller her 300th win as an NCAA head coach in ASU’s 79-47 win at San Diego (1-3) on Thursday night.

Sun Devil Standouts

  • Gabby Elliott scored a season-high 24 points and made six 3-pointers, coming within one triple of tying the program’s single-game school record. Elliott also pulled down a game-high seven rebounds to go with four assists.
  • Marley Washenitz (19 points, six assists) joined Elliott as the only two Sun Devils who have scored in double figures in every game this season.
  • Three players had multiple makes from beyond the arc: Elliott (6), Washenitz (4) and Amaya Williams (2). In Thursday’s win, Williams came through with a performance that was more befitting of a seasoned senior than a freshman playing in her third career game. Starting in place of Last-Tear Poa (missed second straight game due to injury and is being evaluated on a game-by-game basis), Williams became one of two freshmen who have had 11 assists in a game this season. She also pitched in six points and had a team-high four steals.
  • McKinna Brackens scored 10 points and had three rebounds.
  • Elliott (seven rebounds), Heloisa Carrera (six points, six rebounds), Jyah LoVett (three points, five rebounds) and Martina Fantini (six points, five rebounds) all had five or more rebounds combining for 23 of ASU’s 36 rebounds.

Teamwork

  • With San Diego's 20 turnovers on Thursday, ASU has now forced the opposition into an average of 24 turnovers in the first three games. Equally important is ASU has averaged 27 points per game off those turnovers.
  • In five of the last eight quarters, ASU’s opposition has shot under 31 percent. The Sun Devils have allowed 13 or fewer points (52.0 point per game average) seven times in 12 quarters.
  • To put into perspective how well ASU shot the ball from long range on Thursday, the Sun Devils made a higher percentage of their attempts from outside the arc (63.6 percent/14-22 3 FGs) than they did inside it (44.4 percent/16-36 FGs). Combined, ASU concluded the game making a season-high 51.7 percent of its shots.
  • The 47 points ASU allowed represents the fewest scored by an opponent since ASU defeated Idaho State 72-40 on Nov. 19, 2023.

How it happened

  • In the first half, ASU made the same number of field goals inside the arc (7-14) as it did outside the arc (7-12). In a bit of a statistical anomaly, the Sun Devils made a higher percentage of their shots attempting shots from the latter (58.3 percent).
  • Elliott (13 points) and Washenitz (11 points) accounted for 24 of ASU’s 40 points in the first half.
  • Williams (four assists), Elliott and Washenitz (three assists each) and Heloisa Carrera (one assist) combined for 11 assists on ASU’s 14 first-half field goals.
  • ASU took its biggest lead of the first quarter after a free throw by Washenitz gave the Sun Devils a 21-10 lead with just over two minutes remaining.
  • The Toreros responded by scoring the next nine points to get within two points (21-19) less than two minutes into the second quarter.
  • ASU surpassed San Diego’s scoring spurt as it scored 10 unanswered points to take a 31-19 lead after Elliott’s 3-pointer midway through the period.
  • The Toreros got as close as seven points before ASU closed the quarter with a 9-0 run to take a 40-24 lead at the half.
  • By game’s end, the Sun Devils had doubled their 16-point halftime lead.
