LAWRENCE, Kan. – Behind a career-high 25 points from Noemie Glover, No. 8 Sun Devil Volleyball opened Big 12 play in dramatic fashion, beating No. 18 Kansas in five sets (28-30, 25-21, 22-25, 25-20, 15-11) on Friday night on the road.

Notable stats

  • Arizona State (10-2, 1-0 Big 12) improves to 2-2 against ranked teams this season after beating Kansas (9-6, 0-1 Big 12). For head coach JJ Van Niel, it his his 10th ranked win in his career. 
  • In five-set matches, Van Niel is 5-2, including 2-0 this season. 
  • Arizona State earned double figures in blocks for the sixth time this season, notching 14, which is tied for a season high. Graduate middle blocker Colby Neal led the way with six.
  • The Sun Devils held the Jayhawks to a .156 hitting percentage, the fourth match in a row ASU has held its opponents to a sub-.200 clip. Only three teams have hit above. 200 against Arizona State.
  • Junior opposite Noemie Glover earned a career-high 25 kills in the win on a .311 clip. This is the second match in her career with 20-plus kills, both from this season. It also was her sixth match with double-digit kills this season. She added three blocks as well.
  • Notching her fourth double-double of the year, senior outside hitter Bailey Miller had 10 kills and 13 digs. She also tied her career-high in blocks with five and had a season-high four aces.
  • Sophomore libero Faith Frame tied for the match high in digs with 20, her second match of the year and eighth in her career reaching that mark. This is her eighth time this season reaching double figures in digs.
  • Pacing the offense, setters Brynn Covell and Sydney Henry had 28 and 18 assists, respectively. Covell earned a double-double with 10 digs, the second of her career.
  • Senior outside hitter Tatum Parrott had a season-high 14 digs to go with her eight kills in her return to the court. This is her third time this season reaching double-digit digs.
  • Adding to the offense, redshirt freshman Kiylah Presley had nine kills and junior middle blocker Ella Lomigora had seven. 

 

Set one: Kansas 30, ASU 28
The first set was a battle from the start. An early 3-0 run from Kansas put the home team up 5-3, but ASU put together three in a row that ended with two-straight blocks to go up 8-7. After another run of three for the Jayhawks, the Sun Devils again responded with three-straight points, capped off by an ace from Miller, to lead 12-11. Three errors in a row from Kansas put ASU up 16-14. It was back and forth as they neared the end of the set, with the Jayhawks getting to set point first at 24-22. Presley earned a kill and a block in consecutive rallies to tie it up at 24 all. The set went the distance and the Sun Devils had two set point opportunities, but the Jayhawks took it 30-28.

Set two: ASU 25, Kansas 21
With Covell serving up two aces, Arizona State jumped out to a 4-0 start in the second frame. Kansas got back in it, and after a number of missed serves on both sides, the home team tied the set at 7-7. After a 5-1 run for the Jayhawks to go up 13-11, the Sun Devils caught fire, scoring five in a row with three points coming from blocks to take the 16-13 advantage. ASU grew its lead to 21-15 after a 5-1 run that saw three kills from Glover and two from Parrott. The Jayhawks closed the gap a bit after a 3-0 run, but Miller’s kill ended the set at 25-21.

Set three: Kansas 25, ASU 22
The close competition continued in the third set. Colby Neal served ASU on a 3-0 run to lead 6-4. Kansas scored three in a row to go back on top, 8-7. After a 9-9 tie, it was back and forth for a while. Back-to-back kills from Glover and Lomigora made it a 15-13 advantage for ASU heading into the media timeout. Out of the break, Kansas responded with three in a row, forcing an Arizona State timeout. Following a few Sun Devil points, the Jayhawks scored four-straight points to push their lead to 20-17, bringing out the second timeout from the visitors. Down 23-18, ASU put together a late 4-0 run to get within one, but the comeback was too late as Kansas took the third set, 25-22.

Set four: ASU 25, Kansas 20
Arizona State took an early 6-3 lead after a 4-0 run capped off by an overpass kill by Parrott. The Sun Devils slowly added to the lead, with a kill from Miller and a kill from Presley making it 12-8. A 4-0 run with a block and kill from Miller pushed the lead to 16-10. An ace from Miller and a kill from Parrott pushed the lead to 19-11, the largest lead of the set. After Presley tooled the block and added to the 22-14 lead, Kansas called its second timeout. With ASU at set point, Kansas scored four in a row, making it 24-20 and forcing a Sun Devil timeout. A kill from Colby Neal ended the run and forced a fifth set.

Set five: ASU 15, Kansas 11
With Piper Rama at the service line, Arizona State jumped out to a 7-2 lead to start the fifth set. Kills from Glover and Parrott extended the advantage to 9-4. The Sun Devils doubled up the Jayhawks at 12-6 after kills from Presley and Miller. Kansas fought back into it, getting within three at 14-11 and causing an ASU timeout. However, Glover sealed the five-set win at 15-11.
