PHOENIX -- Sun Devil Baseball continued its historic tradition of developing professional baseball players with nine players selected in the 2025 MLB Draft in Atlanta earlier this week.
All nine selections came in the first 10 rounds of the draft, which was a modern day draft record for the program. The 1981 National Championship team had nine selections as well, but three of those came in the first rounds of either the June secondary phase or January draft - neither of which exist in the current format.
Arizona State’s nine selections bring the program’s total to 486 all-time MLB Draft selections - including those early year alternative draft segments. The 486 all-time selections easily lead all collegiate programs with no other program posting more than 400. The Sun Devils have now seen a collegiate record 421 individual players drafted since the program recorded the MLB’s first-ever draft pick with Rick Monday’s selection in the inaugural 1965 draft.
The nine selections were tied with Arkansas for the most in the first 10 rounds of this year’s draft and tied for the third-most overall this season.
ASU has had at least one Top-10 round pick in all but four drafts in history (2017, 2014, 2002, 1970). Sun Devil head coach Willie Bloomquist has produced 15 top-10 round selections in his first four seasons and 27 selections overall, including 2023 second-round selection of the Minnesota Twins, Luke Keaschall, who made his major league debut earlier this season.
The draft showed off ASU’s ability to develop talent with Lucas Kelly, Jack Martinez, Kyle Walker, Will Koger and Matt King all finding themselves as Top-10 round picks after not being drafted, period, in their first eligible draft seasons prior to this year. Brandon Compton and Kien Vu both came to Arizona State as walk-ons prior to their picks this week.
Compton highlighted the Sun Devil selections as the 46th overall pick in the draft, going early in the second round to the Marlins. The power left-handed bat - who originally came to ASU as a pitcher - went from walk-on to the buzz of the MLB Draft Combine with the highest average exit velo in the event’s tracked history and the three hardest-hit balls and five of the top-seven best exit velos ever. He also recorded a Top-10 30-yard dash time at the event.
Compton became ASU’s highest draftee since Spencer Torkelson (No. 1 overall) and Alika Williams went in the first round of the 2020 draft.
Southpaw Ben Jacobs was next off the board with the 107th overall pick by the Tigers in the third round. He became ASU’s highest-drafted pitcher since Alec Marsh was selected in the second round in 2019 and the highest-drafted left-handed pitcher since Brett Lilek was drafted in the second round in 2015.
With their selections, ASU has had at least one player go in the first five rounds in nine of the last 10 drafts and in 21 of the last 23.
RHP Lucas Kelly was selected next in the sixth round (182nd overall) by the Mariners before a host of Sun Devils flew off the board in rounds 8 and 9 in OF Isaiah Jackson (Angels, Round 8, 229th overall), RHP Jack Martinez (Diamondbacks, Round 8, 243rd overall), INF Kyle Walker (Astros, Round 8, 246th overall), OF Kien Vu (Reds, Round 9, 264th overall) and RHP Will Koger (Padres, Round 9, 280th overall).
Shortstop Matt King rounded out the 2025 selections as the 2025 Big 12 Newcomer of the Year was selected in the 10th round with the 293rd overall pick by the Pirates.
The Sun Devils have been glutton with talent at shortstop through the years as King adds his name to recent MLB Draft success out of ASU at the position following the lead of Sean McLain (Round 5, 2022), Drew Swift (Round 8, 2021), Alika Williams (Round 1, 2020), Colby Woodmansee (Round 5, 2016), Drew Stankiewicz (Round 11, 2014), Deven Marrero (Round 1, 2012), Andrew Romine (Round 5, 2007), Dustin Pedroia (Round 2, 2004) and current Sun Devil head coach Willie Bloomquist (Round 3, 1999) as part of the illustrious list in the past two-plus decades.
All told, 12 of the last 16 primary starting shortstops (since Bloomquist in 1999) have gone in the first 15 rounds of the MLB Draft with 10 of those going in the Top-10 rounds.
