NOTES FROM LAST MEETING – CINCINNATI 73, @ASU 66 / JAN. 25, 2025
•Despite a game high-tying 25 points from Jalyn Brown – her eighth 20-point performance of the season and sixth nine games – the Sun Devil women's basketball team fell to Cincinnati 73-66.
• Kennedy Fauntleroy scored 16 points, one point short of matching her season high. Tyi Skinner scored 10 of her 12 points in the second half for the Sun Devils, who connected on 50 percent of their 3-pointers (7-14) in the game.
• The Bearcats scored 38 percent of their points at the line where they made 28-39 for the game. Nearly half of their 29 fourth quarter points came the same way as they hit 82 percent (14-17) of their free throws in the final 10 minutes.
• Brown was perfect at the line making all 12 of her free throws on Saturday. As a team the Sun Devils connected on 79 percent (19-24) of their attempts.
• For the fourth time this season, the Sun Devils had the exact number of rebounds as the opposition. Brown led the way with nine boards, one short of giving her a double-double for points and rebounds. Nevaeh Parkinson pulled down six (also scored six points) and Jazion Jackson had five to go with one assist and two steals.
• After scoring 20 points in the second quarter and 21 in the third quarter, it appeared the Sun Devils were on course to win the game when Parkinson's second layup in 37 seconds gave ASU a 57-46 advantage, matching its biggest lead of the game. At the time, there was little indication that the Bearcats were capable of making a comeback. They had scored 28 points in the first half and had not scored more than 16 points in any of the first three quarters.
• It appeared the Sun Devils were on the verge of growing their lead even more as Parkinson's two field goals early in the fourth quarter made it nine of 10 shots the Sun Devils made going back to the third quarter. At the same time, the Bearcats had made only two of their last 13 attempts.
• As it turned out, the Sun Devils made only two of their final 14 shots.
• After Brown's layup put ASU up 59-50 with 5:47 remaining, their scoring consisted of four free throws and one 3-pointer the rest of the way.During that same span, the Bearcats outscored ASU 23-7 to come away with the win. Fourteen of those 23 points came at the foul line.
SKINNER NEARS SINGLE-SEASON 3-POINT RECORD
• In each of her two seasons at ASU, Tyi Skinner has proven to be a phenomenal 3-point shooter. Skinner needs four triples to tie Katie Hempen's single-season school record of 76 in set in 2014-15.
• In just two season, Skinner has ascended all the way up to No. 4 on ASU's list for career 3-pointers.
• Earlier this season, Skinner reached 1,000 points as a Sun Devil. Including her two seasons at Delaware, Skinner has scored 1,693 points and knocked down 236 3-pointers.
• How is this for consistency? In her two seasons at Delaware, Skinner shot 80 percent from the foul line. In two seasons at ASU: 80.5 percent.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR
• Jalyn Brown (14x) & Tyi Skinner (13x) have combined to lead/tie for the team lead in scoring 27x. Other single-game scoring leaders: Nevaeh Parkinson (3x), Jyah LoVett (1x) and Kennedy Fauntleroy (1x).
• Skinner (26/30 games) and Brown (23/27 games) have combined to score in double figures 49x. The duo has also teamed up to score 20 or more points 21x: Brown 11x and Skinner 10x. In their careers, the duo has combined to score in double figures 100x in 114 games and have accounted for 47 20-point games/Skinner: 25 Brown: 22.
• Brown (971 points as a Sun Devil) needs 29 points to join ASU's 1,000 point club (21 to reach 1,000 points for her career).
• Kennedy Basham has had multiple blocks in a game 20x this season, including a career-high seven rejections at San Francisco (Dec. 17). She has also had six blocks 2x, most recently at Oklahoma St. (Jan. 29). Currently with 76 blocks, Basham is No. 2 on ASU's list for most blocks in a season. Kali Bennett tops the list with 91 rejections in 2011-12.
• Prior to regular season finale vs. Arizona (Mar. 1), Basham led ASU in rebounds in 6 consecutive games. During that stretch she averaged team highs of 9.0 rpg and 2.5 offensive rpg. That span also included 10 boards at Arizona (Feb. 8) and 11 at UCF (Feb. 12). She scored 10 points at Arizona to notch her 3rd double-double of the season. In ASU's overtime win at BYU (Feb. 22), Basham scored 7 points to go with 9 rebounds and 5 blocks. Nearly had her fourth double-double (11 points, 8 rebounds) in ASU's game at Colorado (Feb. 26).
• Makayla Moore was such a tremendous contributor coming off the bench, she earned a spot in the starting lineup. She started four straight games prior to missing the regular season finale vs. Arizona (Mar. 1) due to injury. In the seven games prior to that contest, Moore led the team in 3-point FG pct. (42.3/11-26), was 2nd on the team in 3-point FGs (11), rebounds (6.0 rpg) and offensive rebounds (2.8 O-rpg) and averaged only 1.3 turnovers, the fewest of any player who averaged 20 or more minutes during that stretch.
• Currently shooting 76.3 percent from the free throw line (368-of-482), ASU has a chance to lead a conference for the first time since 2006-07, when its school record mark 75.1 percent (571-of-768) led the Pac-10. That was the only time ASU led the Pac-10/12 in its 38 seasons (1986-87 to 2023-24).
• Over the last 10 games, Nevaeh Parkinson has connected on 56.7 percent of her shots. In the season finale vs. Arizona, Parkinson pulled down 19 rebounds, the most by a Sun Devil in a single game in more than 25 years.
WHAT IFS AND MIGHT HAVE BEENS
The Sun Devils entered the 2024-25 season with eight new players on the roster. With that have come the ups and downs that can sometimes go with combining the talents of several outstanding players who have not had a lot of time to gel. That factor alone could account for ASU's current record. That, combined with a team decimated by injuries means ASU is much closer to being in the top half of the Big 12 than its current record indicates.
Games lost to injuries: 96 (Includes two players who missed season)
(GP/GS): Kennedy Fauntleroy (12/22), Jazion Jackson (11/21), Makayla Moore (21/5), Maggie Besselink (12/4), Mallory Miller (30), Morasha Wiggins (30)
Near Misses
• Against Arkansas State, ASU trailed by 13 with 6:15 remaining. After a 19-5 run, ASU was up by one with 1:01 remaining. Arkansas State scored the last five points of the game to claim the win.
• After going into the half with a 42-33 win vs. Grand Canyon, the Sun Devils were outscored 37-17 in the second half.
• At Coppin State, ASU was unable to score in the final 53 seconds to break a 61-61 tie. The Eagles would go on to win in OT.
• Despite a stout defensive effort and a plus-12 advantage on the boards, the Sun Devils came up on the short end of a 57-50 decision at UC Davis. For the second straight game the Sun Devils held the opposition to the fewest points they had given up this season and allowed the Aggies to shoot only 37 pct. ASU made only 28 pct of its shots and knocked down one of its 14 attempts from long range.
• At San Francisco, ASU was unable to take advantage of a 27-point performance from Skinner and a career-high and tremendous all-around performance from Basham, who had 12 points, seven rebounds and a career-high seven blocks. The difference in the game was at the FT line where the Dons had more than 3x as many attempts (29-35) as ASU (9-11). Still, ASU was tied at 57-57 with 1:09 remaining. After the Dons took a six-point lead, Skinner hit two triples and missed a third that would have sent the game to OT.
• ASU came up short in what would have been the biggest comeback in program history in a 90-83 loss to Iowa St. (Jan. 8). Down by as many as 20, ASU was within three points with 13 seconds remaining. A win would have eclipsed the biggest comeback in program history: 18 points vs. Utah on Feb. 17, 2019, a game in which ASU scored the last 20 points of the game to edge Utah 60-58.
• At then-No. 11 Kansas State (Jan. 19), ASU trailed by two after one quarter, by six at the half and were able get back within seven three times in the fourth quarter after falling behind by as many as 17.
• Led Cincinnati (Jan. 25) by nine points in the fourth quarter. Unfortunately for ASU, a 23-7 Cincinnati down the stretch prevented the Sun Devils from coming away with the win.
• Despite only having eight players available and playing in the kind of hostile environment reserved only for rivalry games, ASU showed tremendous grit in battling back from an 11-point deficit to tie the game after Jyah LoVett's 3-pointer early in the fourth quarter. In the end, ASU's gallant effort was not enough. Due in large part to a 9-0 run that started after LoVett tied the game, the Wildcats were able to come away with a 66-59 win on Feb. 8.
DYNAMIC DUO
The 2023-24 Sun Devils were dealt a serious blow when it was announced before the season that superstar guard Tyi Skinner would miss the entire season due to a knee injury.
Skinner, who played her first two seasons at Delaware, joined Natasha Adair in Tempe after Adair was named ASU's head coach. In 2022-23, Skinner (2023 All-Pac-12 honorable mention) scored 20 or more points 15 times, including 29 points twice. A starter in all 28 games, Skinner averaged 19.3 ppg, (most by a Sun Devil since the 1988-89 ).
The 2023-24 Sun Devils were left pondering, 'what might have been,' had Skinner been able to share the court with Louisville transfer Jalyn Brown. Much like Skinner in 2022-23, Brown emerged as one of the top performers in the Pac-12 in 2023-24. She scored in double figures 26x (11 20-point games) including the two highest-scoring games by a Sun Devil since 2000: 35 vs. Colorado (Jan. 7, 2024) and 34 points at Washington (Jan. 21).
Brown, who earned All-Pac-12 honorable mention honors from the league's coaches and All-Pac-12 recognition from media who cover the league, went on to lead the team in scoring (17.3 ppg) and was 2nd in FT pct. (76.9), 3-pointers (1.3 per game), minutes (35.54 mpg) and FTs made (103) and attempted (134), 3rd in assists (1.6 apg), tied for 3rd in steals (0.9 spg) and 4th in O-rebounds (1.1 rpg).
In her first game since the end of the 2022-23 season, Skinner scored a career-high 30 points – at the time the 17th instance she scored 20 or more points in a Sun Devil uniform – in ASU's 74-66 win over Jacksonville State (Nov. 4). Brown led ASU in scoring (24 points) vs. Arkansas State (Nov. 8). Combined with Skinner's 16 points, the duo combined for 40 points in the game.
Skinner (26/30 games) and Brown (23/27 games) have combined to score in double figures 49x. The two have also combined to score 20 or more points 21x: Brown 11x and Skinner 10x. Brown's season-high 32 points at K-State (Jan. 19) represents the highest single-game total by a Sun Devil this season.
