First Meeting with Texas Tech
The Sun Devil men's basketball fell 111-106 in a double-overtime thriller that had 18 lead changes and 14 ties and saw the Red Raiders double up the Sun Devils in free throw attempts (32-16) back in February. Arizona State shot .556 (40-of-72) from the field, 13-of-27 (.481) from the three-point stripe and 13-of-16 (.813) from the line, but were out-rebounded 38-27 and outscored 14-7 in second chance points. The Maroon and Gold played without freshman Jayden Quaintance who was out after an ankle sprain suffered at Oklahoma State.
Adam Miller had season-high 22 points on 10-of-17 shooting, while freshman Amier Ali had a career-high 18 off the bench on 6-of-7 shooting to go along with seven boards. ASU also had 16 points and six assists from Alston Mason and a career-best 15 points and six boards from Shawn Phillips Jr., who was 7-of-9 from the field in his third start of the season.
Last Time Out
The Sun Devil men's basketball team – down to a six-man rotation after a first minute injury to Adam Miller – fell at Arizona 113-100 late Tuesday night to a hot-shooting Wildcat team that didn't commit a turnover in the first half. ASU cut the lead to 89-86, but a quick 6-0 spurt put Arizona up 95-86 with just under five minutes left.
The Sun Devils took a 16-15 lead seven minutes in behind Amier Ali's early six points off the bench, but Arizona shot .568 (21-of-37) from the field to lead 55-47 at the break, despite Alston Mason's 15 first-half points. Mason had another solid outing, notching a season-high 33 points while adding six assists. He was a perfect 8-of-8 from the free throw line and an impressive 5-of-7 from beyond the arc.
Shawn Phillips Jr. had 14 points and 6 rebounds, while freshman Joson Sanon added 19 points of 6-of-11 shooting. Amier Ali (13 points) and Trevor Best (6 points) stepped up off the bench as the Sun Devils found themselves shorthanded early. It is the seventh time Ali has hit double digits as a sub this year.
Triple Digits
Arizona State has reached the century mark offensively twice this season (106 at #12 Texas Tech on 2/12; 100 at #24 Arizona on 3/4). This is the first time since the 2017-18 campaign that the Sun Devils have scored 100+ points twice in the same season.
Sansational Performance
Freshman Joson Sanon put together a career-best performance against Utah. He finished with 28 points on 11-of-20 (55%) shooting. Hurley also earned his 150th career win when ASU beat Grand Canyon back in 2021.
About those Sun Devil Wins
Coach Hurley has notched 168 wins at Arizona State and has done it while scheduling aggressively and not being afraid to play on the road. He has won 105 games in Arizona, but also has won at least five games in California (16), Nevada (13), Oregon (six) and Washington (five). Four wins have taken place in Utah, three in New York, and two in Colorado, Nebraska, Kansas, Ohio and Pennsylvania. Single wins have taken place in Florida, Georgia, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Texas, and West Virginia. Hurley has won in a total of 18 different states while at ASU.
Constant Competition
Head Coach Bobby Hurley and his staff once again constructed an extremely challenging slate that saw Arizona State hosting winning programs and taking on strong competition away from home. ASU faced 2024 NCAA Tournament participants Gonzaga, Grand Canyon, New Mexico, Saint Mary's, and Florida before Big 12 play even started. Arizona State has played or will play eight teams in the Top-25 of the latest AP Poll a total of 11 times. In total, Arizona State currently has five AP Top-10 teams on their schedule.
