LA JOLLA, Calif. – A great start to February for the No. 7 Sun Devils as the team won against Concordia, 26-4, and No. 22 Cal Baptist, 18-7, at Canyonview Aquatic Center on Saturday. ASU will play for ninth place of the Triton Invitational tomorrow at 2 p.m. MST as they face off against No. 15 UC Santa Barbara.
A statement performance win against Concordia, 10 Sun Devils saw scoring action to help lift the team to a win. The defense was able to ground the Eagles and hold them to only four goals scored.
The second meeting with Cal Baptist this season, the Sun Devils and the Lancers competed from the jump. The first few minutes were scrappy but ASU pulled ahead and took the season record against CBU to 2-0.
Junior Sophie Shorter-Robinson had a milestone moment in the matchup versus Concordia as she tallied her 100th career goal, all in Maroon and Gold. Her two goals contributed to tying the single game scoring record for the Sun Devils.
GAME NOTABLES
A dominant start to the day, the Maroon and Gold netted all nine goals of the first half. Karly Frangieh (2), Itziar Almeda (3), Hannah McClaskey, Sophie Shorter-Robinson, Layla Smith, and Gabby Gaetano were the Sun Devil goal scorers.
In the third period, the Sun Devils tallied ten goals with Karly Frangieh, Margot Chammas, Leila Meraz, Hannah McClaskey, Gabby Gaetano, Alison Kokorowski (2), and Layla Smith lighting the lamp. ASU entered the fourth and final quarter up 19-2.
The final eight minutes included seven Arizona State goals and two Concordia goals. Alison Kokorowski had a hat trick in the fourth period alone, not including her two previous goals in the third. Layla Smith also had a multi-goal period, scoring two of the seven. The period rounded out with goals from Leila Meraz and Sophie Shorter-Robinson.
Game 2: Arizona State 18, Cal Baptist 7
While the Lancers were able to strike first, Arizona State quickly responded by outscoring Cal Baptist 10-4 in the first half. Zoe Frangieh (2), Ani Pamp (2), Millie Quin (2), Kat Featherstone, Kinga Hnatyszyn, Molly Glad, and Sophie Shorter-Robinson all dented the twine for the Maroon and Gold in the first half.
Millie Quin tallied the hat trick in the third, in addition to her other two goals from the first half. Freshman Hannah McClaskey was the other goal scorer in the third, netting her goal with 2:41 remaining. In the final frame, Ani Pamp, Molly Glad, Alison Kokorowski, and Layla Smith were all able to sneak past the goalie to close the game 18-7, in favor of the Sun Devils.
