NOTES FROM LAST GAME – @KANSAS 75, ASU 52 / JAN. 16, 2025
• A 33-percent shooting performance and 20 turnovers that led to 20 points for the opposition were the principal culprits in the Sun Devil women's basketball team's 75-52 loss at Kansas on Thursday night.
• Tyi Skinner scored 18 points and hit a game-high four 3-pointers to lead the Sun Devils, who fought back from a 21-point deficit in the first half to close within nine points late in the third quarter.
• Jyah LoVett (10 points), Makayla Moore (season-high nine points) and Jalyn Brown (seven points) combined with Skinner to score 44 of ASU's 52 points.
• The Sun Devils were without an important part of their offensive arsenal on Thursday as starting guard Kennedy Fauntleroy (10.4 ppg in Big 12 games) had to sit out the contest due to an altercation in ASU's game vs. Baylor on Jan. 11.
• Kansas edged the Sun Devils on the glass, 37-36. Jazion Jackson (team-high seven rebounds) and Nevaeh Parkinson (six rebounds) were ASU's top rebounders. The Sun Devils also had a quartet of players – LoVett, Brown, Moore and Kennedy Basham – who each pulled down four boards. Basham also had a game-high three blocks, the 10th time this season she has had multiple blocks in a game.
• The Jayhawks (54 percent) more than doubled ASU (25 percent) in shooting percentage in the first quarter to jump out to a 20-9 lead.
• Kansas closed the first half on a 16-6 run to take an 18-point lead after 20 minutes of play.
• With ASU trailing 46-28 with 3:33 left in the third quarter, Skinner (two free throws and a 3-pointer) and Moore (pair of triples) teamed up to help the Sun Devils score 11 of the next 13 points and cut Kansas' lead to nine points after Moore's 3-pointer with 1:44 left.
• The momentum ASU worked so hard to wrestle away from Kansas on its home floor was reclaimed by the Jayhawks as they were able to score the ensuing four points before the third quarter horn to take a 13-point advantage into the fourth quarter.
• Moore's 3-point play to open the final frame and get ASU back within 10 was unable to ignite any kind of spark as the Jayhawks slowly pulled away with a 14-1 run over the next five-plus minutes to clinch the win.
WHAT TO LOOK FOR
• The Sun Devils come into Saturday's game in a three-way tie for 10th place in the Big 12. With the conference season in its early stages, the difference between 4th place and 10th place is only 2 games.
• The Sun Devils could potentially face three top 25 opponents in their next four games: at No. 11 K-State (Jan. 19), vs. No. 20 West Virginia (Jan. 22) at No. 24 Oklahoma State (Jan. 29). Earlier this season, ASU fell to then-No. 14 Kentucky 77-61. In the Big 12 opener on Dec. 21, ASU lost to current No. 23 Utah 102-82 (the Utes were not ranked at the time.
• In Big 12 games, Nevaeh Parkinson is 3rd in the league in rebounds per game (8.5), Tyi Skinner is 3rd in 3-pointers made per game (2.83), Jazion Jackson is 5th in steals per game (2.6) and Kennedy Basham is 15th in blocks per game (1.83)
• Tyi Skinner (8x) and Jalyn Brown (7x) have combined to lead or tie for the team lead in scoring 15x this season. Also among the single-game scoring leaders have been Nevaeh Parkinson (2x), Jyah LoVett (1x) and Kennedy Fauntleroy (1x).
• Skinner (16 of 18 games) and Brown (11 of 15 games) have combined to score in double figures 27x this season. The two have also combined to score 20 or more points 11x: Brown 6x and Skinner 5x. Four of Brown's six 20-point games have come in her last seven games. Skinner's career-high 30 points in ASU's opening win over Jacksonville State (Nov. 4) represents the highest single-game total by a Sun Devil this season.
• In the six games prior to ASU's most recent contests vs. Baylor and at Kansas, LoVett had averaged 14.7 points and connected on 54.5 percent of her shots. Compared to her first 10 games, she had averaged +5.6 more points per game and shot +13.3 percentage points higher.
• In ASU's last seven games, Parkinson has averaged 10.6 points and 9.1 rebounds. During that stretch she is shooting 53.4 percent (31-58). She has also collected her first two double-doubles as a Sun Devil: 22 points, career high-tying 13 rebounds vs. Penn. (Dec. 30) and 10 points, 12 rebounds at Houston (Jan. 4). Four of her five double-digit rebounding efforts have come in ASU's last eight games.
• Basham has had multiple blocks 10x this season, including a career-high seven rejections at San Francisco (Dec. 17).
PROGRESS NOT ALWAYS MEASURED IN WINS AND LOSSES
The Sun Devils, who have eight new players on this season's roster, have experienced the ups and downs that can sometimes go with combining the talents of several outstanding players early in the season. That factor alone could account for the Sun Devils' current 8-10 record. Some of the near misses...
• Against Arkansas State, the Sun Devils trailed by 13 with 6:15 remaining. After a 19-5 run, ASU was suddenly up by one with 1:01 remaining. Arkansas State scored the last five points of the game to claim the win.
• After going into the half with a 42-33 win vs. Grand Canyon, the Sun Devils were outscored 37-17 in the second half.
• At Coppin State, ASU was unable to score in the final 53 seconds to break a 61-61 tie. The Eagles would go on to win in OT.
• Despite a stout defensive effort and a plus-12 advantage on the boards, the Sun Devils came up on the short end of a 57-50 decision at UC Davis. For the second straight game the Sun Devils held the opposition to the fewest points they have given up this season and allowed the Aggies to shoot only 37 percent. Unfortunately for ASU, it struggled to put the ball in the basket as it made just 28 percent of its shots and knocked down one of its 14 attempts from long range. Down by eight entering the fourth quarter, the Sun Devils did not show any letup, methodically trimming the Aggies' advantage. Besselink's layup got the Sun Devils within two points, 44-42, with 5:36 remaining. ASU was within one possession three more times but did not come away with points in each instance. After Maggie Besselink's earlier field goal got ASU within two, the Sun Devils were only able to connect on three of their 14 shot attempts in the final five minutes of the game.
• At San Francisco, the Sun Devils were unable to take advantage of a 27-point performance from Skinner and a career-high and a tremendous all-around performance from Basham, who scored 12 points, grabbed seven rebounds and had a career-high seven blocks. The difference in the game was at the free throw line, not in accuracy – ASU made 82 percent of its attempts and San Francisco made 83 percent – but in the number of opportunities. By game's end, the Dons had more than three times as many attempts (29-35) as the Sun Devils (9-11). Still the Sun Devils were tied at 57-57 with 1:09 remaining. After the Dons took a six-point lead, Skinner knocked down a pair of 3-pointers and missed on a third that would have tied the game and sent it to overtime.
• ASU came up short in what would have been the biggest comeback in program history in a 90-83 loss to Iowa St. on Jan. 8. Down by as many as 20, ASU was within three points with 13 seconds remaining. An ASU win would have eclipsed the record for the biggest comeback in program history: 18 points vs. Utah on Feb. 17, 2019, a game in which the Sun Devils scored the last 20 points of the game to edge the Utes 60-58.
