FORT WORTH, Texas – Senior Geli Cyr had a career-high 18 kills in No. 14 Sun Devil Volleyball's first Big 12 win and first ranked win of the season, kicking off conference play by winning in straight sets (25-20, 25-22, 25-23) at No. 22 TCU on Wednesday night.

Notable Stats
  • Arizona State (12-1) earned its first Big 12 Conference win by beating TCU (8-3). This also was the first ranked win of the year and the fourth for head coach JJ Van Niel. In all four of his ranked wins, ASU has won in straight sets. 
  • The win was the fifth-straight sweep for the team. It's tied for the third-longest streak in team history.
  • Senior outside hitter Geli Cyr had a career-high 18 kills to lead all players, hitting .429. This was her eighth match of the year with double-digit kills. She also had a near double-double with nine digs and added an ace. 
  • Graduate libero Mary Shroll had her 15th-straight match with double-digit digs, tying for the match-high of 12. 
  • At setter, graduate Argentina Ung had a well-rounded performance with 29 assists, five digs, five kills, two aces and two blocks.
  • Adding to the offensive output, graduates Shania Cromartie and Claire Jeter had eight and seven kills, respectively. Cromartie added six digs as well.

Set One: ASU 25, TCU 20
The Sun Devils started strong, putting together a 4-0 run with two kills from Cromartie to go up 7-3, forcing an early timeout from the Horned Frogs. The teams traded sideouts for a while, TCU unable to get close to ASU. Ung served Arizona State to a 3-0 run to extend the lead to 18-13. With some wild saves from Shroll to keep multiple rallies alive, the Sun Devils won on an error from the home team, 25-20. ASU did not allow TCU to score more than two in a row in this set. 

Set Two: ASU 25, TCU 22
In the second frame, TCU got out to an early 4-1 lead. ASU got back close and took the 10-8 lead after a 4-0 run with Jillian Neal at the service line. The Horned Frogs tied it at 12-12, but a kill from Cyr put the Sun Devils back up. However, TCU scored three in a row for the first time all match to go up 15-13 at the media timeout. Back-to-back kills from Cromartie knotted it back up at 15 all. With another run of four with Neal serving and a massive sharp-cross kill from Cyr, ASU went up 20-17. The Sun Devils called a timeout up 23-21, but an error from the home team won it 25-22 for ASU.

Set Three: ASU 25, TCU 23
The teams were neck and neck to start the third set, neither able to create separation until TCU scored four-straight points to go up 10-6, bringing a timeout from ASU. After a successful ASU challenge that forced a replay, Cyr got a tip kill for the sideout and started a run of three, making it a 15-12 deficit. Neal's hot serving came back in this set, driving the Sun Devils to a run of three after an ace to make it a one-point game, down 20-19. After a second successful challenge this set from Van Niel, the set was tied and then an error put ASU up 21-20. Cyr got kill number 18 to get her team to match point, 24-22. TCU fought off one, but a serving error gave ASU the win, 25-23.
