SEATTLE – Sun Devil softball opened Pac-12 play on Friday night with a 5-2 loss to No. 5 Washington at Husky Softball Stadium.
Arizona State recorded seven hits, two each from Kelsey Hall and Kayla Lissy. Three of those hits were for extra bases. Deborah Jones held the Huskies to three runs on six hits over four innings in the circle. She added three strikeouts.
Hall had the Sun Devils going early with a solo home run in the top of the first inning, which cleared the batter's eye in center field. Yannixa Acuña doubled to start the second inning and scored on a Sara Kinch groundout to give ASU a 2-0 lead.
Washington got consecutive singles to start the bottom of the second, each moving up on a sacrifice bunt. Brooke Nelson followed with a single that scored two runs and tied the game at 2-2.
The Sun Devils left the bases loaded in the third inning, and Jones worked through trouble to strand a runner at third in the Washington third. ASU threatened again in the fifth before close play at first ended the inning and was unable to be reviewed.
Washington took its first lead of the game on a two-run single from Kinsey Fiedler in the bottom of the fifth. The Huskies added a fifth run in the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly from Jillian Celis after Brooke Nelson opened the frame with a double.
The Sun Devils finished 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position, and they left seven runners on base.
