No. 20 Stanford Hands Lacrosse Loss on SaturdayNo. 20 Stanford Hands Lacrosse Loss on Saturday
STANFORD– Taking on their fifth ranked opponent of the season, Arizona State Lacrosse (5-6, 1-2) fell 20-8 against No. 20 Stanford (7-3, 3-0) after a 10-goal third quarter for the Cardinal fueled the second-half surge and led the home team to the win.

The road trip concludes with a non-conference matchup against Detroit Mercy (3-8, 2-1 MAC) on Tuesday, April 2 at 9 a.m. MST. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+.

Despite the loss, junior goalkeeper Katie Vahle tallied 12 saves, which marked her third game of 10+ saves this season.

How it Happened:

Stanford's Aliya Polisky scored two goals in the opening two minutes of the frame, but Annie Haley recorded the first Sun Devil goal which pulled ASU within one. The two teams each traded another, with Shannon Urey scoring for the Maroon & Gold and it was a 4-2 game after the first quarter.

The Cardinal scored three goals in the second quarter before ASU could net one of their own. Lydia Oldknow lasered a free position shot for the goal and it was a 7-3 game. Mina Scott scored out of the next draw to pull the Sun Devils within three goals. Teagan Ng scored the third straight goal for ASU and the Cardinal lead sat at 7-5 at the half. Katie Vahle recorded six saves in the first half.

The first goal of the third came from Stanford, but Thornton quickly found the back of the net for ASU and again it was a two-goal game. Stanford stopped the ASU run and countered with nine straight goals of their own and the lead was 17-6.

Stanford opened the fourth quarter with another goal. Sara Flobeck replaced Vahle in goals with just over 13 minutes in the fourth quarter. Oldknow scored the first Sun Devil goal in over 15 minutes, and it was an 18-7 game. Scott scored her second goal of the game, but the Cardinal netted two more to end the game and the 20-8 score was final.
