EUGENE, Ore. – Despite racing out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning, Sun Devil softball dropped the opening game of its three-game series at Oregon 3-2 on Friday night at Jane Sanders Stadium.
Marissa Schuld went the distance in the circle for Arizona State (17-12, 2-5 Pac-12), allowing three runs on eight hits with five strikeouts. She held Oregon (17-10, 5-2) hitless in 11 at-bats with runners in scoring position and 1-for-14 with runners on base.
ASU managed just five hits in the game, with two apiece from Tanya Windle and Jordyn VanHook. The fifth was a double from Sara Kinch for the team's lone extra-base hit of the evening.
VanHook gave the Sun Devils an early 2-0 lead with a two-run single to right with two outs in the top of the first inning. Kelsey Hall reached on an error, and Windle singled and stole second in front of VanHook's RBI hit.
Oregon threatened to score in the third inning when Hanna Delgado singled and advanced to third on an error. Schuld then forced three straight groundouts to leave the runner at third. A solo home run from Alyssa Daniell to start the bottom of the fourth got the Ducks on the board for the first time.
Schuld again avoided danger in the fifth. After allowing a leadoff triple, she induced two groundouts around a strikeout to keep ASU in the lead at 2-1. The Ducks tied the game with another solo shot from Daniell leading off the bottom of the sixth.
Oregon walked off with the 3-2 win in the bottom of the seventh, using a sacrifice fly from Ariel Carlson. They started the frame with a walk and a double to set up the decisive play.
