TEMPE – Sun Devil Softball battled the rain and clutch hitting from Oregon State in a 5-3 loss on Friday night. Farrington Stadium was sold out, with 1,728 in attendance for the final Pac-12 home opener in program history.

Audrey LeClair and Tanya Windle stayed hot as each posted a double and two hits overall. The double from Windle was her third straight game with a two-bagger. ASU finished with eight hits overall.

Arizona State (16-10, 1-3 Pac-12) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Windle drove home Kayla Lissy with that double. It was the fifth double and ninth RBI in the past three games from Windle.

Oregon State (13-14, 2-2 Pac-12) tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the fourth inning behind a double from Grace Messmer and RBI single by Kiki Escobar.

ASU put two runs on the board in the bottom of the fifth, using a two-out double from LeClair and then a two-run triple from Kelsey Hall for the 3-1 lead. OSU responded in the top of the sixth and tied the game on a two-run home run from Eliana Gottlieb.

The visiting Beavers took their first lead of the night in the top of the seventh when Lici Campbell homered to left to provide the difference in the game.

In the circle, Deborah Jones took a no decision after recording four strikeouts through five innings, allowing six hits and three runs.

NOTABLES

  • The attendance of 1,728 was the largest of the season and the first sell-out.
QUOTABLES
Assistant Coach Jimmy Kolaitis
On the offense unable to produce late in games

"We've got to do a better job of that. It's what we discussed a little bit in the locker room after the game. We come out quick, and then we kind of slow down. We did it last weekend in the first game. And then in the third game, we kind of figured it out, so we've got to be better. We've got to have better at-bats as the game goes on. We've got to adjust a little bit better. So we'll review the film and get ready for the next two games."

Arizona State Outfielder Kelsey Hall
On bouncing back for game two

"This is a great conference, right? You can't take any game for granted. And our biggest talk was about what we can control out of that game. A lot of what we talked about was our principles. And just reflecting on needing to start a little quicker, a little hotter and build our own momentum."

UP NEXT
The Sun Devils will look to rebound against the Beavers in game two of the weekend series on Saturday at 5 p.m. MST. The game will be available on the ASU Live Stream and the Pac-12 Now app.
