SEATTLE – Using one of its best performances of the season, Sun Devil softball defeated No. 5 Washington 9-3 on Sunday at Husky Softball Stadium. For the second consecutive day, the game was delayed by rain.
Despite the conditions, Arizona State (15-9, 1-2 Pac-12) was clicking at the plate and got a solid performance in the circle to snap Washington's (18-3, 2-1 Pac-12) 10-game winning streak.
Tanya Windle and Kayla Lissy ignited the Sun Devil offense with three hits apiece. Windle became the first ASU player since 2012 to record three doubles in a game, which is the team record using the available record dating back to the 2009 season.
ASU also got multi-hit games from Kelsey Hall and Jordyn VanHook, and the team had 12 hits overall. They also added eight walks and went 5-for-16 with runners in scoring position. Along with hitting four doubles, the Sun Devil stole four bases.
Marissa Schuld pitched a complete game for the Sun Devils to earn her second win of the season. She worked around eight Washington hits, posting two strikeouts and limiting the home squad to 3-for-15 with runners on base.
After falling behind 1-0 in the bottom of the first, ASU tied the game in the second. Windle doubled and then scored on a two-out single from Libby Walsh. ASU jumped in front with three runs in the third inning, using an RBI single from Lissy and a two-run double from Windle to build a 4-1 advantage.
The Sun Devils loaded the bases to start the fourth inning and extended their lead to 6-1 on a single from VanHook and a sacrifice fly by Yannixa Acuña.
The Huskies got a run back with a two-out hit in the bottom of the fifth. Schuld then forced a groundout to end the inning, and shortly after, the game went into a one-hour, two-minute rain delay.
The Sun Devil offense came out of the delay and immediately added on to their lead. VanHook and Acuña singled in front of a two-run double from Windle. One batter later, Winde scored from second on a sac fly to the wall from Mackenzie Macfarlane.
