Tempe, Ariz.- Graduate student Lindsay Looney was been named the 2024 Women's Swimming and Diving Pac-12 Scholar Athlete of the Year on Saturday before the evening's finals for her outstanding academic and athletic performances throughout her time as a Sun Devil. This announcement marks the first time a Sun Devil swimmer has received the honors since 2012.
Looney, who has a 4.00 cumulative GPA, adds to her resume of academic honors as she was one of eight Sun Devil student-athletes named a High Academic Achiever, has been named a CSCAA First-Team Scholar All-American and was named to the 2022 Pac-12 Academic Honor Roll. Looney graduated Summa Cum Laude with her bachelor's degree in Family and Human Development in May 2023 and is set to graduate with a master's degree in Family and Human Development in May 2024.
A co-captain on this year's team, Looney has had a storied five-year career as a Sun Devil. Most recently, she repeated as the Pac-12 champion in the 500 free on Thursday night after becoming a Pac-12 champion for the first time in her career a year ago. Looney also was a Pac-12 champion in 2023 in the 200 fly, an event she took fourth place in at the NCAA Championships last season. She also earned Second-Team All-American honors by taking 13th in the 500 free at NCAAs last season. At the 2022 NCAA Championships, Looney competed in the 200 fly (10th), 200 free (24th) and also competed as a part of the 800 free relay.
Looney was also named a member of the 2023-24 US National Team, her third year on the team. She most recently competed at the US Open Championships in Greensboro, N.C. where she took second in the 200m butterfly. Looney additionally competed in the event at the 2023 World Aquatics Championships in Fukuoka, Japan, swimming a time of 2:07.70.
The Pac-12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year award, which is presented in each of the sports the Pac-12 sponsors, was established to honor collegiate student-athletes who are standouts both academically and in their sports discipline. Student-athletes must be a senior (in athletics eligibility) on track to receive a degree, have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or higher, participate in at least 50 percent of the scheduled contests in the sport and have a minimum of one year in residence at the institution.
