TEMPE, Ariz. – The Sun Devil women's basketball team was not able to overcome a 28 percent shooting effort in a 70-41 loss to No. 8 UCLA on Thursday night.
Â
Jalyn Brown (14 points) and Trayanna Crisp (13 points) both rang up double-digit scoring totals against the Bruins. Both players also tied for the team lead in rebounds with five boards each. Jaddan Simmons added six points and three assists.
Â
After a strong first quarter, the Sun Devils (11-18, 3-14 Pac-12) dug themselves too big of a hole to climb out of during the middle two quarters as the Bruins (23-5, 12-5) outscored them 31-15.
Â
UCLA was especially effective scoring in the paint where it had a 44-16 advantage. It also more than doubled up the Sun Devils on the offensive glass (19-7), which led to 14 second chance points.
Â
The first quarter was a see-saw battle. ASU took an early 4-0 lead after consecutive baskets by Simmons and Brown to start the game.
Â
It took the Bruins 1:16 to assert themselves as they reeled off six straight points to take a 6-4 lead.
Â
The back-and-forth scoring volleys continued as Brown (3-pointer) and Crisp (3-point play) reclaimed the lead for ASU 10-6.
Â
The Bruins countered with the game's next eight points to go up 14-10.
Â
The quarter ended with an exchange of 3-pointers and the Bruins took a 17-13 lead into the second quarter.
Â
UCLA increased its lead 26-16 five minutes into the second stanza thanks in large part to it starting the quarter making 4-of-5 shots. During the same stretch ASU was 1-of-5 from the floor.
Â
The Sun Devils had a scoring drought that lasted more than six minutes. A 3-pointer by Crisp ended ASU's cold spell. Crisp's triple and a layup by Brown got ASU within eight, 29-21, with under a minute remaining. Unfortunately, ASU was not able to stay within single digits at the half as the Bruins scored four points in 22 seconds to take a 33-21 lead into the locker room.
Â
Brown and Crisp tied for the team lead in scoring with seven points each.
Â
The Sun Devils conclude the regular season on Saturday (12 p.m. MST) when they host No. 7 USC on Senior Day.
