TEMPE – No. 19 Sun Devil Gymnastics opens the 2024 season on Monday in Desert Financial Arena, hosting Central Michigan at 7 p.m. MST.

The meet is the home opener, as well as a Green Game. The dual meet between the Sun Devils and Chippewas will begin at 7 p.m. MST.

  • In the WCGA Preseason Coaches Poll, the Gym Devils are ranked No. 19 after finishing the 2023 season at No. 15 on Road to Nationals.
  • Last season, the Gym Devils finished with a 7-6 record and wrapped up the season ranked No. 15 on Road to Nationals. This was the sixth year in a row that the Gym Devils finished the season ranked in the top 25. Earning a team NQS of 197.105, this was the third time ever that ASU ended the regular season with an NQS over 197, two of which have been while head coach Jay Santos has been in Tempe. 
  • Seeded for the third season in a row for the postseason, the Sun Devils advanced to the NCAA Regional Finals for the second time in three years. Representing the team at the NCAA Championships was Hannah Scharf, who qualified as an individual in the all-around.
  • The core of the 2023 squad is returning to 2024, only losing two routines from last season (one of vault and one on floor, both from Jordyn Jaslow). The team has six of the seven Gym Devils who won 30 event titles in the 2023 season returning for the 2024 season. The team was led by Hannah Scharf with 11 event titles, four of which were in the all-around. Emily White finished with seven, while Anaya Smith and Sarah Clark had four each.
  • Scharf continues her standout career as a Sun Devil with a fifth year in 2024. Last year, she competed in the all-around in every meet and ended the season ranked No. 21 in the nation in the all-around. She competed as an individual at the NCAA Championships in the all-around. She had 19 scores of 9.9-plus (five were 9.95-plus), eight of those coming from floor. Of 56 routines, she scored below a 9.800 just seven times. 
  • On the 2024 Pac-12 Preseason Watchlist, the Sun Devils are represented by Scharf and senior Jada Mangahas. This is the second year in a row on the list for Scharf, who has been All-Pac-12 First Team in the all-around for the last three seasons. She also was first team on floor last season. Mangahas has also played a key role on the team, competing on vault, bars and floor. This season, she looks to add beam to become a threat in the all-around.
Opponent Outlook
Central Michigan (0-0)
  • The Chippewas finished at No. 38 on Road to Nationals with a 196.165 NQS. They won the MAC Championship with a 196.525. Additionally, they had two individuals compete at NCAA Regionals, both of whom were seniors and graduated.
  • The team returns 13 gymnasts, including 2023 MAC Freshman of the Year Luciana Alvarado-Reid. 
  • This is the third meeting all-time between ASU and CMU, both teams having won once. The last dual meet between these two teams was in 2010 when the Chippewas won.
