Cary, N.C. - Ryan Campos is one of just three catchers on the 45-player Golden Spikes Award Midseason Watch List, according to an announcement from USA Baseball Monday afternoon.

Campos becomes Sun Devil Baseball's 10th honoree on the midseason list since it began in 2012. He is the first since Hunter Bishop, Alec Marsh and Spencer Torkleson all were recognized in 2019.

Of the 10 recognized Sun Devils, all nine that preceded Campos were selected in the MLB First Year Player Draft and six have played at the Major League level.

ASU's backstop has done anything but slump in his sophomore campaign, leading the Pac-12 with a .430 average and has the second highest OBP at .545. Only two men have more walks in the conference than his 23. Campos' 36 runs scored are the most in the Conference of Champions. The Maroon and Gold became the first Pac-12 team to 20 wins with a midweek victory over Seattle, and Campos has led the charge in Sun Devil Baseball's league-best batitng average of .319.

He has reached base in 27 straight games and in 64-of-71 (90.1%) games with the Sun Devils overall. He extended his hit streak to 10 with four knocks against Seattle. With a 14-2 record over the past 16 games, Campos is batting .532 (33-62) with 12 walks and two HBP, reaching base at a .618 OBP.

"This is the level we have always expected from Ryan," Head Coach Willie Bloomquist said. "He has been a leader for us in all aspects of the game, both on the field and in the clubhouse. We are thrilled to see a deep run for him in this award this season."

The semifinalists for the 2023 Golden Spikes award will be announced May 22. Several rounds of voting precede the June 25 final announcement.

Since 1978, USA Baseball has honored the top amateur baseball player in the country with the Golden Spikes Award. Following the first-ever presentation of the Award to Bob Horner of Arizona State, the Golden Spikes Award has been presented each year to the player who exhibits exceptional athletic ability and exemplary sportsmanship.
