GREENSBORO, N.C.- It was another dominant few days in Greensboro for the Sun Devil swimmers and pros at the 2023 Toyota U.S. Open Championships which took place from Wednesday (Nov. 29) through Saturday (Dec. 2).
A total of 21 medals were won among the student-athletes and pros as they swept the men's, women's and combined point totals. In addition, three meet records were set throughout the duration of the championships.
Wednesday, November 29
Pro Paige Madden opened up competition for the Sun Devil swimmers and pros as she took the silver in the 800m free with a time of 8:29.91.
Thursday, November 30
Madden competed in the A final finishing with a time of 4:08.01 in the 400m free. Lindsay Looney took second in the C final as she clocked in a 4:14.54.
Pro Drew Kibler won the 400m free event with a time of 3:47.58 with fellow pro Luca Urlando rounding out the top four with a time of 3:49.26.
Pro Regan Smith competed in the A final of the 200m IM while Ieva Maluka competed in the C final and took second with a time of 2:14.18. Pro Chase Kalisz won the men's 200m IM (1:57.43), Hubert Kós took second (1:57.88) and pro Grant House finished fourth (1:59.19).
In the A final of the 50m free, pro Simone Manuel competed in this event and swam a 24.82. In the B final, pro Olivia Smoliga took second with a 24.99 finish.
Friday, December 1
Smith began the third day for the swimmers and pros with a third place finish in the 400m IM with a time of 4:38.77. In the men's 400m IM, Kalisz won the event and pro Jay Litherland took third place.
Looney competed in the B final of the 100m fly where she finished third with a time of 59.89. Kharun and Kós each finished in the top four of the men's 100m fly.
Manuel took third in the A final of the women's 200m free and Madden took first in the B final while Maluka rounded out the top four of the C final. Kibler and Urlando each finished in the top four of the A final of the 200m free.
Smith won the 100m back and pro Olivia Smoliga took fourth in the A final and Kós won the men's 100m back with a time of 53.19.
Saturday, December 2
Madden capped off her week in Greensboro with a second place finish in the 1500m free, with a time of 16:11.26.
Smith had a pair of first places finishes in both the 200m fly and 200m back, where she broke the meet record in both events. Kós, the 2023 World Aquatics champion in the 200m back, won the same event Saturday night to cap off his time in Greensboro.
Manuel and Smoliga each competed in the A final of the 100m free with Manuel swimming a 53.65 and Smoliga swimming a 54.83.
Pro Ryan Held took second in the 100m free with a time of 48.36 and Kibler took fourth with a time of 48.71. Patrick Sammon swam in the B final as he finished with a 48.94.
In the women's 200m fly, Looney took second in the A final with a time of 2:09.31. Kharun won the men's 200 fly with a 1:54.66, a meet record. Urlando finished sixth overall with a 1:57.38 and Litherland took third in the B final with a 1:58.78.
