HILTON HEAD, S.C. - Sun Devil Women's Golf put together a strong showing for the second consecutive day at the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate.
No. 12 Arizona State is tied for sixth after improving their score by a stroke from the first to second round. Head Coach Missy Farr-Kaye's team sits just two strokes out of fourth place as they have set themselves up for a great finish at one of the premier events of the Spring. Arizona State is tied with No. 2 Wake Forest and currently ahead of five Top-25 teams, including No. 3 Oregon, No. 9 Baylor, and No. 13 Virginia.
Freshman Paula Schulz-Hanssen has thrived under pressure, showing she is built for the big stage. The freshman carded the best round by any Sun Devil so far, shooting 70 (-1) to move into the Top-15 (T-12th). She is joined in the Top-20 of the 90-golfer field by Grace Summerhays, who sits in a tie for 18th after another solid round. Ashley Menne was the biggest mover of the day, climbing 23 spots into a tie for 28th after shooting a 71 (E).
The Sun Devils have one more chance to move up the leaderboard at the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate, starting tomorrow at 7:30 AM MST. GOLF Channel will have a live broadcast of the final round, with the coverage starting at 12:30 PM MST.
ROUND BREAKDOWN
It didn't take long for the Sun Devils to get on the board with birdies, as Grace Summerhays and Ashley Menne converted opportunities on the 12th hole. It was Amanda Linner and Paula Schulz-Hanssen's turn to register birdies, as they both went under par of the 13th hole. It started a string of three straight birdies for Schulz-Hanssen, as she caught fire in the first nine holes and finished one-under.
After Arizona State made the turn, they played cleaner golf, building momentum heading into the final day. Ashley Menne was one-under over her final nine holes, with a birdie on six the only non-par score of her front nine. Beth Coulter was also extremely consistent, finishing even on holes 1-9, registering a birdie on three. Amanda Linner also had a birdie on three as a part of her even finish over the final eight holes. Schulz-Hanssen used a birdie on seven to move to even, while Grace Summerhays birdied the second and sixth hole.
QUOTABLES
"I am really proud of the determination and grit of this team to keep working and hanging in there," Coach Farr-Kaye reflected. "We started off a little bit slow and had a couple struggles, but hung in there and kept working hard for birdies."
"Long Cove Club is a very good golf course and offers a great test" Coach Farr-Kaye added. "The wind is very swirly here and can pick up and drop without a moments notice, which is a little difficult. I think tomorrow will be our best day yet because we keep learning and growing every round."
