TEMPE, Ariz. - Sun Devil Lacrosse kicked off the 2022 Pac-12 Lacrosse Championship in style, cruising to a 17-8 victory over California on Wednesday.
No. 3 seed Arizona State (10-7, 7-3) advances to the semifinal round for the second straight season by earning their seventh consecutive victory over the Golden Bears. In front of a lively crowd during a rare night game at Sun Devil Soccer/Lacrosse Stadium, the Maroon & Gold controlled the action from start to finish. It was a successful first day of hosting for ASU overall, with both games well attended and showcasing highly-skilled lacrosse.
As shown by the upset in the first quarterfinal matchup, anything can happen in postseason play. Sun Devil fans did not have to worry about their team falling victim to this, as Head Coach Tim McCormack had his group ready to play.
"Extremely pleased with how we approached this game," Coach McCormack remarked. "We remained focused and are excited to get another opportunity to play together tomorrow."
The host school was led by a balanced offense attack, with 10 different players scoring at least one goal, including seven finishing with exactly two goals a piece. Not only was the offense clicking, the defense held the Golden Bears in check all evening. Cal managed only eight goals and the Sun Devils were quicker to the ball all night, holding a significant 29-16 advantage in ground balls.
The Sun Devils move on to play No. 2 seed USC in the Pac-12 Lacrosse Tournament semifinals tomorrow night at 7 PM MST. At 4:30 PM MST in the prior game, the other semifinal pits No. 1 seed Stanford against No. 5 seed Oregon. Every game of the 2022 Pac-12 Lacrosse Tournament be featured live on Pac-12 Networks and the Pac-12 Now App
HOW IT HAPPENED
It was all Sun Devils from start to finish, as the host side proved to be the better side from the opening whistle. ASU took a 1-0 lead courtesy of a Mina Scott goal, as she was responsible for two of the first three goals in helping her team build a 3-1 lead at the start. The lead ballooned to as high as four after back-to-back goals from Kaylon Buckner and Kylie Kroeger. A second Cal goal would make it 5-2 after the first period, with Arizona State firmly in command.
Less than two minutes into the second period, the Sun Devils were already padding their lead. This time, it was a pair of Emily's that teamed up to provide some cushion. First it was an Emily Glagolev goal followed shortly after by an Emily Munro goal and all of the sudden ASU found themselves in front 7-2. Kaylon Buckner would answer a Cal 2-0 run with a goal, as the Sun Devils dominated the second period. The final three goals of the half were scored by the Maroon & Gold, giving them a healthy 11-5 advantage at the break.
Instead of resting on their laurels with a comfortable lead, Arizona State continued to play intense and intelligent lacrosse. The defense took over the third quarter, as Cal scored only one goal, and it came with 5:49 left in the period. ASU's defensive unit was disciplined and aggressive, preventing Cal from ever establishing a rhythm while also creating offensive chances. The Maroon & Gold had a 4-1 advantage in the third quarter, creating separation and extending the lead to 15-6.
With the game in hand and a semifinal matchup looming just 24 hours later, Coach McCormack was able to make some valuable subsitutions in the fourth quarter. Several starters received rest, but this did not stop the Sun Devils from creating a double digit advantage and triggering a running clock. ASU went ahead by as many as 11 before capturing a 17-8 victory in the Pac-12 Lacrosse Tournament quarterfinals.
