SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - Sun Devil Women's Golf senior Alexandra Forsterling qualified for the 2022 U.S. Women's Open this week.
The Berlin, Germany native competed in a qualifying event at Gainey Ranch Golf Club down the road in Scottsdale. In a field with 79 professional and amateur golfers competing for a spot in the LPGA Tour Major Championship, Forsterling finished tied for first to clinch her spot as one of three to advance.
"We are so proud of Alexandra for this impressive accomplishment," Head Coach Missy Farr-Kaye remarked. "It will be a nice way to start her professional career. She has been playing great golf and continues to work hard on her game."
Forsterling finished at two-under as the field was tasked with completing 36 holes in one day. Her first round 72 (E) was solid, but it was her second round 70 (-2) that clinched her entry into one of the world's most prestigious tournaments. She beat out several professional competitors with established resumes for the exclusive opportunity.
"It is exciting to qualify for the U.S. Women's Open," Forsterling remarked. "I look forward to competing at such a historic event with the world's top golfers."
The 2022 U.S. Women's Open will be held at Pine Needles Lodge & Golf Club in Southern Pines, North Carolina. GOLF Channel will broadcast each day of the event, which takes place June 2-5. This will be the second straight year a Sun Devil on the current roster will compete in the U.S. Open, with junior Amanda Linner with qualifying and participating in the 2021 edition. The field is still being completed, but Forsterling will be joined by fellow Sun Devil Anna Nordqvist, who clinched a spot thanks to her win at the 2021 Women's British Open. LPGA Tour regulars Azahara Munoz, Carlota Ciganda, Giulia Molinaro, and Linnea Strom will likely join her as well.
Forsterling is in the midst of one of the most prolific seasons in program history and she continues to add to her growing resume before the season has even come to a close. The No. 3-ranked golfer in the nation (top-ranked Senior) has been named to the ANNIKA Award Watch List as one of the finalist for National Player of the Year. She also recently competed in the most prestigious amateur event in the sport, participating at iconic Augusta National Golf Course as a part of the Augusta National Women's Amateur. The Pac-12 selected her as a First Team All-Conference selection. Now she has earned a spot in a LPGA Tour Major Championship.
Through her first three years with the Sun Devil Women's Golf program, Alexandra Forsterling was a consistent presence in the lineup, performing admirably for a Top-10 Arizona State team. During a breakout senior campaign, she has taken her game to another level, becoming one of the best golfers in the nation. She is doing all this while maintaining a 3.95 GPA and pursuing her passion in Film, epitomizing the ideal student-athlete.
Forsterling has not finished lower than 22nd in any of her 10 tournaments, despite the fact that the Sun Devils have faced one of the nation's toughest schedules. The highlight of her season was winning the Individual Title at the PING/ASU Invitational back in March, beating out a field with 25 of the Top-100 ranked golfers, including the nation's No. 1. Forsterling has also recorded Top-10 finishes at the Stanford Intercollegiate, Darius Rucker Intercollegiate, and the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge. She is the senior leader on the No. 7-ranked team and one of the favorites to win the NCAA Women's Golf Championship.
Not only has she achieved great things on the course, but she has also led by example with her performance in the classroom. Forsterling became the seventh recipient of the Pac-12 Scholar Athlete of the Year from Sun Devil Women's Golf. She has made the ASU Dean's List in each of her seven semesters and is on track to go 8-for-8 (Fall 2018, Spring 2019, Fall 2019, Spring 2020, Fall 2020, Spring 2021, Fall 2021). She has been a member of the Pac-12 Academic Honor Roll each of her first three seasons and qualifies yet again for the distinction this Spring.
