PALO ALTO – Sun Devil Baseball recorded double digits against the team with the second-best ERA in the Pac-12 but it wasn't enough in a 16-10 loss at #14 Stanford in the series finale on Sunday in Palo Alto.
Joe Lampe and Jacob Tobias recorded three hits each, with the latter adding three RBIs on the day. Sean McLain, Conor Davis and Ryan Campos also had multi-hit days as ASU racked up 15 hits and six doubles on the afternoon.
Unfortunately, the Stanford bats were up to the task, recording 22 hits and 16 runs on their own accord with four home runs and five doubles as the Sun Devil pitchers simply couldn't put together a clean inning. TURNING POINT
The Sun Devils jumped out to a 3-0 lead right out the gates, only for Stanford to answer with two in the bottom of the first. ASU bounced back with two in the second to make it 5-2 just to have Stanford post two of its own. Stanford went to the pen in the third, bringing out its southpaw ace Quinn Mathews and that proved to be the difference in the game. The lefty shut down ASU for four straight innings after the hot start and allowed the Stanford bats to take advantage of a diminished ASU bullpen down the stretch. BIG MOMENT
For the second straight day, a 5-5 tie was broken up by a gut-wrenching Stanford home run, this time coming in the fourth inning off the bat of Vincent Martinez – who finished the weekend with four home runs. The massive blast, coupled with Mathews' ability to work around jams through the middle innings would simply keep the game out of reach despite ASU's hot bats throughout the day, FINAL STRAW
Stanford extended the lead to 12-5 after six innings. ASU loaded the bases with one out in the seventh, recording a pair of runs on a Campos RBI single and Magee groundout to get back within five. But Lampe flied out to end the threat and Stanford shut the door with a four-run bottom of the seventh to effectively put the game out of reach at 16-7. NOTABLES
ASU will stick around in the Bay Area tomorrow to take on Santa Clara in a Monday midweek contest at 1 p.m. AZT. The game will be broadcast on the WCC Network and available over the local airwaves on 1440 AM. The Sun Devils then return home for a three-game series against USC starting Thursday, April 14 at 6:30 p.m. AZT.
