It is fitting that Laning and Nordin, both redshirt seniors, concluded their final 500 free races of their Sun Devil careers alongside each other. Both have made an indelible mark on the program, both are Pac-12 Champions and both are putting the final touches on their collegiate careers with a top-15 finish on the national stage.
Thursday also marked a personal-best finish for Nordin in the 500 free at the NCAA Championships. At her last time competing in this event at NCAAs in 2019, Nordin placed 17th in prelims and missed the cut for the finals.
The Sun Devils didn't have any participants in the remaining final events, which included the 200 IM, 50 free and 200 free relay.
MORNING PRELIMINARIES
On Thursday morning, Laning and Nordin took care of business in the preliminaries of the 500 free to ensure a top-15 finish was possible. Laning went 4:40.70 (14th) and Nordin was a spot behind at 4:40.78.
Jade Foelske was the other Sun Devil to compete on Thursday, as she raced in the preliminaries of the 200 IM. Foelske, whose hometown of Brookhaven, Georgia, is roughly 10 miles from the McAuley Aquatic Center, went 1:59.59, which missed the cut for the finals.
