MALIBU, Calif. - Arizona State men's tennis celebrated a pair of big singles upsets in Friday's 4-3 loss to No. 21 Pepperdine in Malibu, California. No. 67 Murphy Casone followed up his upset of the No. 1-ranked player in collegiate tennis with a three-set victory over No. 9 Daniel De Jonge. Unranked Fabien Salle earned a two-set sweep over No. 22 Pietro Fellin. ASU will return home and prepare to host the ASU 8-Team Tournament at the end of the month.
The day kicked off with ASU coming out hot in doubles. ASU claimed the point with wins on courts one and two from No. 23 Max McKennon/Salle (6-3) and Jacob Bullard/Cassone (6-3).
Pepperdine came back in singles though. Corrado Summaria quickly dealt with Moritz Hoffmann at No. 6 but Salle followed with his win over Fellin to put ASU ahead 2-1. Pepperdine went on to rally and clinch the match with wins on 4, 5, and 2. Cassone played out his match at No. 1 where he won 7-5, 2-6, 7-5.
