PITTSBURGH - Arizona State opened its east coast road trip with a 24-19 loss to Pitt Friday night. Michael McGee and Cohlton Schultz shined with their major victories over No. 7 Micky Phillippi and Jake Slinger, and Brandon Courtney moved to 12-0 on the year with his 10-4 decision over Gage Curry. Anthony Valencia, who beat out '21 NCAA runner-up Jake Wentzel 6-3, and Jacori Teemer both remain undefeated at 10-0 and 9-0 with their wins, while Kyle Parco improved to 11-1. ASU closes out the road swing with a 10 a.m. MST Sunday morning dual against Princeton (ESPN+).
 
How it happened
125: #4 Brandon Courtney (ASU) dec. #32 Gage Curry (Pitt), 10-4 (ASU leads, 3-0)
            Courtney went up early and never slowed, starting the match with a pair of takedowns and giving up an escape to lead 4-1. Another takedown and escape went his way in the middle frame, and he closed it out with a final T2 to went 10-4
 
133: #4 Michael McGee (ASU) dec. #7 Micky Phillippi (Pitt), 5-3 (ASU leads, 6-0)
            McGee and 3x NCAA qualifier Micky Phillippi took things slow and opted to mostly circle each other on the mat, neither taking too many shots at the other. They exited the first period with neither wrestler earning a single point. Things started to pick up in the second period with the guys tying 2-2 thanks to a penalty and escape for the Panther and a takedown for the Sun Devil. McGee kept pushing Phillippi, and eventually the Devil won 5-3 thanks to his riding time bonus.
 

And as time expires, McGee wins it 5-3 ????

141: #22 Cole Matthews (Pitt) pins Julian Chlebove (ASU), 1:44 (Tied, 6-6)
            Chlebove gave up two early into the first period, and went on to be pinned after 1:44.
 
149: #11 Kyle Parco (ASU) maj. dec. Dan Mancini (Pitt), 16-2 (ASU leads, 10-6)
            Parco continues to dominate the competition. He opened with a quick 6-0 lead in the first by way of a T2 and four-point nearfall, then added a pair of takedowns and an escape in the middle frame to lead 11-1. He closed out his match with a takedown and two-point nearfall to Dan Mancini's lone escape.
 
157: #3 Jacori Teemer (ASU) dec. #21 Elijah Cleary (Pitt), 6-2 (ASU leads, 13-6)
            Teemer was firmly in control of his match from start to finish and didn't give up a point until the third period. His victory came by a pair of takedowns, an escape, and his riding bonus, while Elijah Cleary earned just two escapes.
 
165: #6 Anthony Valencia (ASU) dec. #13 Jake Wentzel (Pitt), 6-3 (ASU leads, 16-6)
            In the second marquee bout of the night, Valencia topped NCAA runner-up Jake Wentzel in a drawn-out grinder of a match. Valencia went up 2-1 in the first off a takedown, then picked up an extra point on a penalty call on Wentzel. The Devil then earned an escape, gave up a reversal, and slammed a final takedown to get the win.

174 Zane Coleman was pinned in 2:31, 184 Josh Nummer stalled out, and 197 Jake Ortiz was pinned in 2:26.

The heavyweight showdown featured Cohlton Schultz taking on Jake Slinger. Schultz had a fire lit under him early and quickly went up 14-3 in the first period thanks to four takedowns and a two-point and four-point nearfall. The energy cooled in the middle frame, Schultz earning one escape, the day concluded with Schultz getting a final takedown in the third period to get the 18-5 major.
