True freshman Calynne Rosholt continues to shine in her first collegiate tournament, displaying poise and composure beyond her years. She is in contention for an individual title, competing against most of the top collegiate golfers in the nation at the prestigious Fall tournament.
"Calynne is playing like a seasoned veteran even though this is her first collegiate tournament," Head Coach Missy Farr-Kaye remarked. "We are really excited about her future."
Rosholt carded a 70 (-2) a day after firing a 69 in her first ever round as a Sun Devil. Back-to-back spectacular rounds puts her in a great position to make a run at the individual crown. She currently sits in a tie for fifth place thanks to a 139 (-5), tied with South Carolina's Hannah Darling. Everyone is chasing Julia Johnson of Ole Miss, who paced the field with a 134 (-10). Rosholt was nearly mistake-free, going bogeyless on the front none and finishing with only one on the day.
Alexandra Forsterling (+2/146) joins Calynne Rosholt in the Top-20, as she is currently tied for 20th. She was matched in today's round by Ashley Menne, who improved her score by a stroke from yesterday. Amanda Linner and Alessandra Fanali will look to bounce back with the third and final round taking place tomorrow.
As a team, the Maroon & Gold fell back to 10th place (+11/587), but sit only five strokes back of the Top-5 in a crowded leaderboard. An indication of the difficulty of the conditions and the golf course, eight of the 12 teams are six-over par or higher.
"The Sun Devils had a tough day today," Coach Farr-Kaye observed. "We struggled with the wind conditions on the front side."
Arizona State turned things around down the stretch, finishing strong on the back nine. Over the final five holes, the Sun Devils finished two-under, including two birdies on 17 by Rosholt and Forsterling.
"We did get a few shots back coming down the stretch which was great," Coach Farr-Kaye reflected. "I believe this team has a tremendous amount of fight in them and they will come back strong tomorrow."
Arizona State will begin their round tomorrow at 6:05 am MST, paired with LSU and Minnesota starting on hole ten. Here is how the Sun Devils will tee-off tomorrow
Calynne Rosholt, 6:45 am
Alexandra Forsterling, 6:35 am
Amanda Linner, 6:25 am
Ashley Menne, 6:15 am
Alessandra Fanali, 6:05 am
HISTORY AT THE ANNIKA INTERCOLLEGIATE
This is the Sun Devils fourth appearance in the event, last participating in 2019. Linn Grant led the way finishing tied for eight, while ASU placed fourth as a team among a loaded field at one of the most prestigious tournaments of the season. The Maroon & Gold ended up ahead of several talented teams in the standings at the end of the three-day event, including No. 1 USC, No. 2 Duke, No. 6 UCLA, and No. 12 Arizona. Just missing a spot in the Top-10 was Alexandra Forsterling (-1/215), who ended the tournament one stroke behind Grant for the best score on the team. Alessandra Fanali recorded her first collegiate hole-in-one in the first round at the very same Royal Golf Club, doing so on the 16th hole with a 5 iron.
Arizona State also competing back in 2014 & 2016 when the tournament was in Orlando. During the 2016 ANNIKA Intercollegiate, Linnea Strom recorded one of her 20 career Top-10 individual finishes, earning a tie for eighth. Back in 2014, Noemi Jiminez put together a strong performance, finishing in the Top-5 of the individual race.
