TEMPE, Ariz. – Arizona State head women's basketball coach Charli Turner Thorne today announced the signing of Isadora Sousa, who will be joining the Sun Devils from Chipola College in Marianna, Fla.
A six-foot guard and native of Sao Paulo, Brazil, Sousa has twice been named an NJCCA All-American – third team in 2020 and second team in 2021 – by World Exposure Report. She is coming off a campaign in which she earned FCSAA/NJCAA VIII All-State, All-Panhandle Conference first-team and FCSAA/NJCAA VIII All-Tournament Team honors in helping lead Chipola to its seventh FCSAA Championship and an appearance in the NJCAA Tournament semifinals.
"Isadora is a strong, versatile guard who is an excellent decision maker and proficient scorer, Turner Thorne said. "She comes from a program that has won several championships over the years and she has also gained valuable experience playing against the world's best competition in a pair of FIBA events. She is an outstanding teammate who will fit wonderfully with our elite culture."
Sousa started all 25 games for Chipola last season and averaged 13.5 points, 5.8 rebounds and 4.8 assists. She scored in double figures 19 times, including a 30-point performance in Chipola's 90-80 win over Gulf Coast State College. Souza, who shot 39 percent from beyond the arc, knocked down three or more triples seven times last season. Sousa was named the FCSAA Region 8 player of the week (Mar. 1) after averaging 17.5 points, 7.0 rebounds, 6.0 assists and 2.0 steals in wins over Tallahassee and previously unbeaten Northwest Florida State.
As a freshman, Sousa started all 28 games and averaged 15.0 points, 6.6 rebounds and 5.7 assists per game on her way to All-Panhandle Conference first-team recognition. She was named the FCSAA Region 8 player of the week (Mar. 1) after leading Chipola to a trio of road wins while chipping in 19.7 points, 10.7 rebounds, 4.7 assists and 2.0 steals per game.
Sousa competed for Brazil at the 2016 FIBA U17 World Championships and the 2015 FIBA Americas U16 Championship. In 2015, Brazil made it to the gold medal game.
Sousa is the fourth player the Sun Devils have added to their roster since the conclusion of the 2020-21 season. She joins former Rutgers standout Mael Gilles, 2020 Mountain West Conference Newcomer of the Year Ayzhiana Basallo (San Jose State) and 2021 All-Mountain West standout Jade Loville (Boise State). Combined with incoming freshman Meg Newman, the Sun Devils will have five newcomers on their 2021-22 roster.
In addition to the aforementioned newcomers, the Sun Devils also return several talented players including guards Taya Hanson (averaged 2.58 3-pointers per game in 2020-21, the most ever by a Sun Devil) and Jaddan Simmons (averaged 10.8 ppg in 2020-21, becoming the first Sun Devil freshman to average double figures in scoring since 2003) and posts Jayde Van Hyfte (led team and finished fourth in the Pac-12 in offensive rebounds in 2019-20 before missing all but one game last season due to injury), Maggie Besselink (led the team and finished 16th in the Pac-12 in rebounds last season) and Katelyn Levings (led the team and finished seventh in the Pac-12 in offensive rebounds in conference games last season).
