TEMPE, ARIZ.-- Arizona State water polo picked up a stunning 8-6 upset victory over No. 2 UCLA (7-2, 5-2) off of a three goal performance from senior defender Bente Rogge. The Sun Devils jumped out on an early lead and did not give the Bruins the opportunity to come back late in the game. ASU is now 6-3 in MPSF conference play, and 12-6 on the season.
In the program's 2nd all-time win over UCLA, ASU defensively drew 11 exclusions, including four penalty fouls as the Sun Devils held UCLA to their lowest scoring game of the season. Chelsea Karimazondo got the start in goal for ASU and notched eight saves, and held UCLA to a 0.231 shooting percentage with six goals on 26 shots. The Sun Devils held the reigning Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Newcomer of the Week, Malia Allen, to zero goals in today's victory.
Head Coach Todd Clapper praised his team and their historic win, "I think we were much more patient on the attack, and it made a big difference. We were able to get settled in our defense...I think the rest of the game was really nice."
Along with Rogge, Luca Petovary had a multi-goal day and tacked on two goals, giving her 35 on the season in an impressive rookie campaign. Petovary is just two goals shy of tying Lieke Rogge for ninth all-time in goals-scored as a freshman. Bente on the other hand has 142 career goals and remains at eighth all-time. Lara Kiss was another Sun Devil scorer, and got it done on both sides of the ball, recording one goal and three steals.
Up Next: ASU will face the Bruins tomorrow for their final home game of the season before hitting the road one last time at USC. They will play at 9:30 AM MST on Sunday, April 11. The game will be available to watch via the Arizona State Live Stream.
