NICEVILLE, Florida - No. 3 Arizona State (3-0) made its presence known Monday with the opening two duals of the Journeymen Collegiate Duals in Niceville, Florida. ASU blew out Hofstra 42-4 before rocking No. 7 Virginia Tech 23-13 in Northwest Florida College's Raider Arena. Four major decisions went ASU's way along with a pair of tech falls from Kyle Parco and Jacori Teemer in the opening duel against the Pride. No. 14 Michael McGee had a huge 8-7 upset of No. 4 Korbin Myers at 133, McGee never trailing enroute to his win. Arizona State is set to take on whoever comes out on top of Northern Iowa, Cornell and Penn State in the Blue Pool championship match at 6 p.m. MST/7 p.m. CST Tuesday. Tuesday's match will once again stream on Rokfin with live results via TournaFlex.
It was a high-octane day start-to-finish. Starting at 125 with Brandon Courtnet and Dylan Acevado, ASU didn't concede a point until Jake Ortiz's loss to Hofstra's Charles Small at 184 to snap the sun Devil 34-0 run. Kordell Norfleet and Cohlton Schultz then followed with a a win each to close out dual one.
The Hokies kept things close in every single match and had Raider Arena rocking like a NCAA national title was on the line. No. 3 Courtney and No. 16 Sam Latona moved like they were shot out of a cannon, chasing each other over the mat. Courtney held off the upset though and won 8-4 thanks to a trio of takedowns, an escape and his riding time bonus. No. 5 Parco showed why he deserved to be ranked higher with a 14-1 victory at 149. The Fresno State All-American earned two-point and four-point nearfalls, and strung together seven points in the third period alone to beat out Kylan Montgomery.
165 No. 6 Anthony Valencia scored in the double digits in a high-flying bout that saw him somesault his way to victory. A TK, escape and 4NF put him up 7-3 in the first period, before a series of escapes put the match out of Clayton Ulrey's reach. No. 8 Kordell Norfleet had the final statement match of the day with his 14-3 win over Dakota Howard. Norfleet had 6-point, 3-point, and 5-point periods, and kicked off the day with three-straight takedowns in the opening frame.
