TEMPE, Ariz. – Sun Devil Athletics has earned a new all-time high of 92 percent Graduation Success Rate (GSR) for its student-athletes, announced by the NCAA on Thursday.

Sun Devil Athletics has either maintained or surpassed its all-time best GSR every year since 2008 and is tied for third in the Pac-12 Conference. A record 10 teams posted GSR scores at 100 percent – men's basketball, women's basketball, women's golf, gymnastics, hockey, lacrosse, women's swimming and diving, women's tennis, triathlon and volleyball.

"We applaud the elite academic performance of our student-athletes," Vice President for University Athletics Ray Anderson said. "During recruiting we promise them and their families the opportunity to pursue their athletic and academic dreams. The 92 percent Graduation Success Rate speaks to the tremendous commitment of our student-athletes and the support of the Office of Student-Athlete Development, our coaches and the ASU community at-large."

Sun Devil Athletics' GSR has risen 23 percent since the metric was first introduced by the NCAA in 2005 and ASU set a new goal of 90 percent after surpassing its original goal of 80 percent in 2012.

ASU had an 88 percent GSR of African-American student-athletes. African-American women are 100 percent, tied for first in the Pac-12 for the third year in a row. African-American men are 86 percent, an all-time high. Among female student-athletes, GSR is 96 percent, their fourth year in a row surpassing 95 percent, while among men it's 89 percent, another all-time high.

Lacrosse and triathlon both earned 100 percent GSR for their first time reporting. In its second year reporting, hockey got another 100 percent. Women's tennis continued 13 consecutive years in which they've recorded 100 percent GSR. Men's basketball, gymnastics and women's swimming and diving all reached 100 percent GSR for the fourth-straight year. Women's basketball and volleyball earned 100 percent for the third year in a row.

Football has an 86 percent GSR, which is an all-time high for the program and ranked third in the Pac-12. Another program reaching a new high is wrestling with 88 percent, good for second place in its conference.

"Sun Devil Athletics is committed to the holistic development and success of our student-athletes. One of the key pillars of this success is academic achievement as measured by the NCAA Graduation Success Rate. Upon its inception in 2003, our stated goal was to achieve 80 percent. After reaching this initial goal, we re-established a goal of 90 percent or above and have surpassed that for the first time this year,"  said Jean Boyd, Deputy Athletic Director. "Being third in the conference, one percentage point behind second place, speaks volumes about the culture of academic excellence among Sun Devil student-athletes. The Office of Student-Athlete Development, led by Andrea Lore, continues to be a catalyst for this great work, in partnership with our coaches, the campus community, and the student-athletes."

Since 2001, Division I has seen 37,450 more graduates than they would have if the rate had remained the same.

Just this year, 22,350 student-athletes graduated, compared to 18,405 – the number that would have graduated if the rate remained at 74%. pic.twitter.com/UJBHGz9QSb

GSR is the NCAA's primary tool for measuring academic success in Division I athletics and, unlike the federal government's methodology, accounts for student-athlete transfers from one institution to another. It's designed to show the proportion of student-athletes on any given team who earn a college degree.

This is the 28th release of institutional graduation rates since national "right-to-know" legislation was passed in 1990. In 2005, the NCAA DI Committee on Academic Performance released the first set of GSR data.
