Arizona State track and field opened the NCAA West Prelims celebrating Jamar Marshall Jr. improving his program-best 100H time, Carlan Naisant punching his ticket to the NCAA National Championships at Hayward Field with a seventh-place finish in the javelin, and Turner Washington doing the same with a first-place victory in the shot put. The Devils also recorded six qualifying times to advance to Friday's running finals.

Naisant kicked off the day with a solid 66.78m/219-1 throw in the javelin where he finished seventh over three flights. His qualifying mark came on his first throw of the day. It was 15.7 feet short of his personal best but that doesn't matter as he punched his ticket to nationals at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.

Marshall Jr. followed up Naisant's performance with a head turning second-place finish in the 110m hurdles to earn a chance to run again Friday night. The freshman already owned the program record, a 13.49 mark from the Pac-12 Championships, and he improved on that tonight with a 13.39 finish; His time was wind aided (2.8). Kentre Patterson also secured a spot Friday, running 13.73 to finish third in his heat and 15th overall.

Vincent Mauri then earned the opportunity to represent ASU Friday in the 1500m, running a 3:45.34 (three seconds off his PR) to take third in his heat and ninth overall. Alex George also ran the 1500m but missed a qualifying spot by five hundredths of a second.

Big man Turner Washington entered the meet with very little doubt that he'd advance in the shot and successfully continued his dominance by winning the event with a 20.74m/68.5 heave, two inches further than Texas' Adrian Piperi. The throw was a foot shy of his PR, but it is a new facility record.

Jalen Drayden and Austin Kratz followed with dual PRs in the 100m dash, Drayden running 10.26 and Kratz going 10.33. Both will feature in Friday's finals heat. The final qualifying time of the day came from Marshall Jr. in the 400H where he ran 51.25 to take second in his heat.
