SOMIS, Calif. – Sun Devil Women's Golf moved up the leaderboard after a solid second round at the Bruin Wave Invitational hosted by The Saticoy Club.
Arizona State (610) carded a 301 on Tuesday, the best round of any team at the tournament through two rounds. The Sun Devils have managed the windy conditions the best of any team, leapfrogging Oregon in the standings to claim the top spot after finishing eight strokes better than the Ducks today. Head Coach Missy Farr-Kaye's team will begin the final round tomorrow morning with a five-stroke lead thanks to an eight-stroke improvement in the second round.
"We managed the golf course a little better today overall," Coach Farr-Kaye remarked. "It's tough to play a course where you hit good wedge shots and they spin off the green. As a team, we finished much better today and I am very encouraged by that. Tomorrow we are looking to put our best day out there!"
The Maroon & Gold paced the field with 12 birdies for the second-straight round, with their 24 total birdies five more than any other team. ASU has the best par-four stroke average and by far the lowest par-five stroke average, having finished seven-under on such opportunities.
Linn Grant continues to prove why she is currently the second-ranked female amateur in the world, using her experience in windy conditions to her advantage. Grant is the only individual in the 82-golfer field to sit under par after two rounds, thanks to a spectacular 70 (-2) today. To put her 70 in perspective, not only is it the lowest-round by anybody, no other golfer has managed to break 72.
"Linn played a great round of golf today finishing strong," Coach Farr-Kaye added.
The sophomore sensation holds a two-stroke lead over Ching-Tzu of Oregon heading into the final day, looking to claim her fourth consecutive individual medalist honor dating back to last season. Grant extended her lead on the back nine thanks to two birdies and an eagle on 14, one of only six eagles recorded at the Bruin Wave. She leads the field in par-five stroke average and is second in par-four stroke average, extremely effective in her approach regardless of the setup.
Several Sun Devils joined Grant in improving their scores from yesterday, as the coaching staff made the proper adjustments to account for the unique weather. One of those who improved was Ashley Menne, who currently boasts the second-best score of any Sun Devil. Representing a counting score for the first time in the Maroon & Gold, Menne has proved she belonged and currently sits in 12th place.
Alessandra Fanali remains in contention for a spot in the Top-10, sitting in a tie for 13th. She has the second-best stroke average on par-five holes, trailing only teammate Linn Grant. Fanali ended both the front and back nine strong and makes the Sun Devils the only team with three golfers currently in the Top-15.
Olivia Mehaffey chopped her score down by an incredible six strokes, allowing her to move up 21 spots on the leaderboard. Mehaffey eliminated any catastrophic mistakes that plagued her first round and managed to pull into a tie for 32nd. Arizona State also saw major improvement from
Amanda Linner, who improved her score by seven strokes. Linner was a big reason why the Sun Devils were able to make up ground in the team standings, moving up 22 positions on the individual leaderboard on her own.
Playing as an individual, Alexandra Forsterling followed the trend of her teammates in delivering a significantly better round. Like Mehaffey, Forsterling moved up 21 spots on the leaderboard today and into a tie for 32nd thanks to a six-stroke jump from yesterday.
Arizona State looks to continue the momentum on Wednesday, as they complete the final 18 holes of the tournament. They will once again be paired with second-place Oregon and third-place New Mexico with the Championship on the line. Here is how the Sun Devils will tee-off tomorrow:

This is the 12th edition of the Bruin Wave Invitational, which is an annual event jointly-hosted by Pepperdine and UCLA. Arizona State will be participating in the event for the fourth time in program history and looking for their first title. The Sun Devils have previously finished as the runner-up twice and third at their last appearance in 2019.
Olivia Mehaffey won the first of three Individual Titles during a brilliant 2018-19 campaign at the 2019 Bruin Wave Invitational. She became the first Sun Devil to win the event and joined Carlota Ciganda (2010), who finished fifth back in 2010, as the only Sun Devils to finish in the Top-5.
