PALO ALTO, Calif. - The No. 6 Arizona State women's water polo (12-5, 1-1 MPSF) team nearly completed a comeback attempt to upset No. 2(T) Stanford (15-1, 1-0) but fell short, losing 8-9 Sunday at the Avery Aquatic Center in their second MPSF contest.
The Sun Devils fell behind early, trailing 3-0 at the end of the first quarter befor going on a 5-1 run through the second quarter and most of the third. The score was tied five different times in the contest and ASU led twice before two Stanford goals in the final 2:21 of the game cemented the win for the Cardinal.
Amira Van Buren led the team in scoring, following up her career-high six goals at San Jose State the day prior with another four goals against the Cardinal. Alison Cameron had two goals of her own along with two assists.
Goalkeeper Itzahiana Baca had five saves, holding the Cardinal scoreless in the second quarter and to their second-lowest final score of the season.
