FEDERAL WAY, Wash. – No. 17 Sun Devil women's swimming and diving finished up a successful Pac-12 Championship run, placing fifth overall with a total of 943.5 points. More importantly, the Sun Devils' point total placed them ahead of Arizona to secure a big Territorial Cup Series point for the third year in a row.
"We finished up strong tonight and secured the Territorial Cup Series point for the 3rd year in a row," coach Bob Bowman said. "Our distance crew and 200 flyers scored the bulk of our points today and we are very pleased with our performance here, and look forward to the National Championships in a couple weeks."
ASU scored over 200 more points than the Wildcats, who ended their championship slate with 725 points. Despite finishing in the same place as last season, the Sun Devils outscored their 2019 mark by 11 points, showing the constant year-by-year improvement under head coach Bob Bowman.
Several women shined throughout the weekend with junior Emma Nordin turning heads in every single event she swam in. Nordin started off the weekend with her first-ever Pac-12 Championship in the first individual event she swam in, setting several milestones with a single swim in the 500 free.
Her mark of 4:33.74 not only secured her the conference crown, but also gave her a NCAA "A" Cut, the school record and the current fastest time in the nation in that event. Nordin's prowess didn't stop there, as she took second place overall in both the 200 freestyle and the 1650 freestyle.
Cierra Runge was another constant top performer for ASU, joining Nordin on the podium in several distance events including a third place finish in the 500 free and the 1650 free.
The youth also shined at the conference championships, most notably in the 200 butterfly. Two freshmen and one sophomore made almost half of the field in the A Final as freshmen Lindsay Looney (fourth) and Jade Foelske (sixth), and sophomore Ruby Martin (seventh) made the cut.
Silja Kansakoski also podiumed this weekend for ASU, taking second place in the 100 breast with a time of 59.90.
With conference championship action concluding tonight, the Sun Devil women now set their sights toward NCAAs. "B" cut selections are set to be announced in the coming weeks, and fans can keep up with the action all season long by following @SunDevilMTennis on Twitter.
