TEMPE, Ariz. – Arizona State Lacrosse continues a four-game road stretch with a trip to the Midwest, taking on the University of Detroit Mercy on Friday, February 14 prior to heading to play Northwestern on Sunday, February 16.
Coming off the first victory of the Tim McCormack era, the Sun Devils return to action on Friday at 11 am MST when they matchup with Detroit. The Maroon & Gold will immediately head to their next destination, traveling to No. 3 Northwestern for another 11 am MST tilt on Sunday.
LAST TIME OUT
Four different Sun Devils put together multi-goal performances, as the Sun Devils earned a 16-12 victory over UC Davis in the 2020 season opener.
Arizona State's new-look offense was the epitome of efficiency, with the team shooting an incredible 64.0 percent (16 for 25), putting 20 of 25 shots on net.
The balanced offensive attack was spearheaded by a pair of returning All-Conference honorees. Redshirt senior attacker Kerri Clayton picked up right where she left off last season, scoring a game-high four goals while dishing out two assists. Clayton set the tone early, scoring a goal 30 seconds into the game, the second-fastest in school history. With her four-goal output, Kerri Clayton now has nine 4+ goal performances in her Sun Devil career. She has dominated in season openers since coming to Tempe, scoring 15 goals in three games leading her team to a 3-0 record.
Junior attacker Emily Glagolev looked to be in midseason form, as she finished with five points (three goals & two assists). She now has at least two points in 10 consecutive games dating back to last season, producing a total of 41 points during that span. Glagolev put together her fifth-career hat trick and 15th multi-assist performance.
A major contributor to the offense was Carley Adams, who recorded her first-career hat trick and fourth multi-goal performance. Arizona State received productive from a new source, as freshman Anna Winkeler not only scored her first collegiate goal, she made it a multi-goal performance. Emma Carlson and Olivia Hood each registered their second collegiate goal, as eight different Sun Devils found the back of the net.
Arizona State succeeded in several facets of the game that have been emphasized by the coaching staff. Maura Cissel was outstanding in the draw circle, earning a career-high six draw controls. Pressure defense caused 8 Aggies' turnovers, as UC Davis committed a total of 24 turnovers thanks to a swarming defense. Lia Willis was all over the field, setting a new career-high by collecting a team-high six ground balls. After scoring 70 points in 17 games last season, the Sun Devils held UC Davis star Amanda Outcalt to only one point (assist). Goalkeeper Berkeley Bonneau made several crucial saves and managed to disrupt the Aggies offense with key interceptions.
"We saw toughness and up-tempo play," Coach McCormack reflected. "The defense was solid and Berkeley was great in goal. Overall, a good team effort."
KNOW YOUR FOE: DETROIT
The attention of the team now shifts to the contest against Detroit, hosted at Ultimate Soccer Arenas in Pontiac, Michigan. The first meeting between the two schools is the Titans' home opener.
"The first thing we have to do is take care of business at Detroit", Coach McCormack emphasized. "That is the main thing we are focused on right now. We have to make sure we are ready for those guys because they present challenges."
Detroit is a member of the of the Southern Conference, going 4-1 in league play last season eventually falling to Furman in the SOCON semi-finals. Head Coach Megan Callahan's enters her second season after guiding the Titans to an 8-10 a year ago.
Detroit dropped their season opener and only game of the season so far to the Sun Devils' Sunday opponent Northwestern. Sophomore midfielder Taryn McManus scored two of the three goals in her team's first game. The top returning goal scorer is junior attacker Kamryn Corraro, who finished 33 goals last season for the Titans and scored in the season opener. Detroit used a combination of two goaltenders in the opener, with returner Maddie Johnson earning the start and making six saves.
KNOW YOUR FOE: NORTHWESTERN
The Sun Devils will be facing a historic challenge on Sunday when they take on No. 3 Northwestern inside Ryan Fieldhouse at 11 am MST. By claiming the No. 3 ranking entering the matchup, the Wildcats represent the highest-ranked opponent Arizona State has faced in the brief history of the program.
"Making the trip to Northwestern will be a great experience for our program," Coach McCormack mentioned. "It is an exciting opportunity for us to compare ourselves with one of the most talented teams in the country."
The toughest challenge of the non-conference schedule also provides a unique storyline. Former Northwestern Assistant Coach Tim McCormack leads Arizona State into a familiar place. After spending six seasons on Head Coach Kelly Amonte Hiller's staff, Coach McCormack will prepare to face a familiar foe in the first-ever meeting between the two schools.
Third-ranked Northwestern opened their season at home, defeating Detroit 30-3. Sixteen different Wildcats scored, with sophomore midfielder Izzy Scane leading the team with four. The Wildcats then went on the road for a showdown with No. 20 Duke. Jumping out to an 8-0 run in the first 12 minutes, the Wildcats earned a 24-20 win in the Top-25 matchup. Lindsey McKone and Izzy Scane paced the offense with five goals apiece. McKone earned Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week honors for her performance.
Two goalies have been splitting time for the Wildcats, with returners Julie Krupnick and Madison Doucette playing evenly. Krupnick enjoyed an outstanding redshirt sophomore career under the direction of new Sun Devil Head Coach Tim McCormack, going 24-9 over the past two seasons while collecting 256 saves.
