TROON, Scotland – The final round of the 2020 AIG Women's British Open was completed yesterday at Royal Troon Golf Club.
Sun Devil Women's Golf continues to be well represented on the LPGA Tour. Several alums have established themselves as threats to win on a regular basis and pro-ready young talent continues to be produced frequently from Missy Farr-Kaye's program. Both of those aspects were on full display at the 2020 AIG Women's British Open.
Anna Nordqvist (2007-09) and Azahara Munoz (2006-09) both earned Top-40 finishes at the LPGA major, while Carlota Ciganda finished just one spot outside the Top-50. Each Sun Devil posted a round of 71 or lower at one point this past weekend. Sophia Popov (USC) from Germany took home the title after shooting a 277 (-7). The trio now looks forward to the next stop on the LPGA tour, the Walmart NW Arkansas Championship at Pinnacle Country Club taking place Aug. 28-30.
Competing in just her fourth professional event and third Women's British Open, Sun Devil Women's Golf senior Olivia Mehaffey showed flashes of the brilliance that allowed her to win the 2015 Scottish Amateur Open victory at the same site. She may have missed the cut at one of the most competitive events of the season, but she gained valuable experience that can be carried over into future professional appearances.
She now turns her attention to the ANA Inspiration, earning a sponsor's exemption earlier in the year which allows her to compete in her second LPGA event of the fall. The LPGA event, which was scheduled to run April 2-5, was postponed due to the pandemic. The tournament will now take place September 10-13 at Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage, Calif. Mehaffey is one of only five amateurs selected to compete at the LPGA major. She will once again be joined by fellow Sun Devils Carlota Ciganda, Anna Nordqvist and Azahara Munoz in the event.

Mehaffey's former Sun Devil teammate Linnea Strom (2016-17) continues to compete regularly on the LPGA Tour, finishing in a tie for fourth earlier in the year at the ISPS Handa Vic Open. It was her second career Top-10 finish, with the first coming at the 2019 Marathon Classic. Strom will now get ready to participate in the Walmart NW Arkansas Championship, the next event on the LPGA circuit.
