Nine members of the Sun Devil water polo squad have been recognized by the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches for their academic work. The Sun Devils finished the shortened season with a 12-5 record just two wins short of matching their total number of wins for the entire 2019 season. ASU defeated nine ranked opponents and posted a 6-1 record at home.
Included in the academic honors were ACWPC All-Americans Amira Van Buren (ACWPC Second Team), Itzahiana Baca (ACWPC Second Team) and Eszter Kiss (ACWPC HM).
Baca, a freshman goalkeeper in biological sciences with a 3.49 GPA, earned the honor and was selected to All-MPSF first team, the first Sun Devil to earn this recognition since 2017.
Van Buren, a junior social work major with a 3.28 GPA, was named second-team MPSF, her second conference honor after making the MPSF All-Newcomer Team her freshman year. In the final weekend and first weekend of MPSF play, ASU won at No. 13 SJSU in dominating fashion behind a career-high six-goal performance from her.
Freshman Eszter Kiss (psychology/3.39) also earned All-MPSF Honorable Mention, and both Baca and Kiss were named to the All-Newcomer Team.
Others honored for their academic work were Meghan Beaudet (digital culture/3.57), Kate Cassidy (communication and political science/3.30), Alison Cameron (business-sports business/4.0), Belen Ehinger (mathematics/3.27), Emma Fraser (justice studies/3.58) and Savannah Hampton (accountancy/3.47).
