TEMPE, Ariz. - Three members of the Arizona State women's water polo team were named to the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches 2020 Women's Division I All-America Team, as announced by ACWPC Monday.
Junior utility player Amira Van Buren and freshman goalie Itzahiana Baca received Second Team honors, and freshman defender Eszter Kiss picked up Honorable Mention honors. The ACWPC All-America teams are selected based on nominations and voting by Division I head coaches.
During the 2020 season, team captain Van Buren compiled a career-best 37 goals, adding two assists and six steals. In what would be the Sun Devils' final weekend of action, Van Buren recorded 10 combined goals in two games - a career-high six in a 14-7 win at No. 13 San Jose State and four in a near-upset at No. 2 Stanford. Van Buren adds the All-America nod to her second conference honor after being named to the MPSF Second Team.
Baca had an impressive freshman campaign, posting 119 saves in 47 quarters played. Baca made 16 saves, the second-most saves by a true-freshman, in the win against No. 15 Princeton. Her 119 saves is the second-best in the MPSF Conference. The All-America honor is the second of the season for her, as she became the first Sun Devil to make MPSF First Team honors since 2017.
Kiss made an immediate impact on both ends of the pool in her first season in Tempe, leading the team with 18 assists and totaling 23 steals, the second most on the team. She earned MPSF Newcomer of the Week honors on Feb. 11, the first Sun Devil to do so since 2016, and was named to the MPSF All-Newcomer Team and earned MPSF honorable mention.
